Sadly this is an interference engine, meaning that when the timing belt breaks, the piston tops most likely will have hit a few valves and bent or broken them.

I'd recommend not turning over the engine any more, and taking the cylinder head off. You will then be able to assess the damage by looking at its underside for bent or broken valves. The big hope is that no pistons are holed, in which case you just need an exchange or repaired cylinder head assembly, timing belt and head gasket etc.

If any pistons are holed or cracked, they will need replacing, and when you do that you need new rings, and possibly honing of the bores. It may also lead to replacement of the big end bearings. In some cars this can be done without removing the engine, I do not have experience with your model.

For this age car you have an economic decision to make before going ahead. All the best.

TIMER BELT BREAKING

I am assuming you mean timing belt as these cars did not come stock with timer belts. You need to get a timing belt and fix it. Just hope that when the belt broke you did not bend any valves as that will be costly to fix.

Does 2001 Mitsubishi Galant have and overheating failsafe

Sorry to say the 4 cyl is an interference engine and I think the V6 is too. So odds are the valves are bent if the belt broke while the engine was running.

1998 GALANT W/ 130,000 MI. TIME TO CHANGE THE

Should be on your 2nd timing belt. If you have the 4cyl engine there is a balance belt that needs to be changed also. Mitsubishi recomends replacement at every 60,000 miles, your 10k over. Most of the time these motors are not interferance engines, But I have seen a few that broke a belt at high rpm that did bent valves......

Need to know about changing the timing belt on my 2001 mitsubishi

This will take about 3-4 hours. If you look at the drive belts, they will all have to be taken off to get to the timing belt. The engine crankshaft has to be positioned for marks to line-up. The crankshaft will have to be prevented from turning so you can take off its drive pulley. Rotate until the alignment cylinder is near TDC, remove sparkplug, then packing a small rope on top of the piston prevents the engine from turning.. Once you change one timing belt, you will never buy another car with a timing belt again. You can get a manual on eBay.
