SOURCE: EGR Valve needs cleaning or replacing

The link below is a diagram of the EGR valve. Looks like a mushroom with vacuum lines attached.

http://www.chiltonlibrary.com/content/images/8666/images/86664018.gif

Instructions:

  • Label and disconnect the hoses from the valve. Carefully loosen and remove the retaining bolts, remembering that they are probably heat-seized and rusty. Use penetrating oil freely.
  • Remove the valve and clean the gasket remains from both mating surfaces.
  • Inspect the valve for any sign of carbon deposits or other cause of binding or sticking. The valve must close and seal properly; the pintle area may be cleaned with solvent to remove soot and carbon.

  • I hope this answers your question. Best of luck.

    SOURCE: My 2004 mitsubishi galants egr

    Hi, the "dirt" that clogs your EGR valve and intake manifold is not dirt in the traditional sense. The dirt in this case is carbon buildup from your engine and emissions. When the carbon builds up to a certain point, it hardens and forms a residue. This residue will ultimately clog your intake manifold and EGR valve, stopping them from functioning properly and causing the rough idling and stalling.

    Carbon buildup is caused by not burning all the gas going through the cylinders. This can be caused by many different things including using bad gas, driving around in the city too much, and not having enough spark in the engine, but the main cause of carbon buildup is driving too carefully. Driving slowly and safely and carefully every single day puts a lot of pressure on the engine. Driving like a maniac isn't good for your vehicle all the time either, but occasionally it is good to break out of your normal rhythm.
    Unless there seems to be a major problem try to keep the car at a steady acceleration until its ride is nice and smooth. You may need to stop the car and then start over by punching the gas pedal again. This way you don't accelerate past the speed limit allowed on the road. It is the rapid acceleration part that burns off the carbon, not the speed, so don't risk a speeding ticket. When the vehicle seems to respond to the gas pedal easily and undergoes no more choking, you've gotten rid of the excess buildup. Try to gun it occasionally each month to prevent more carbon from building up. A few minutes of consistent acceleration will keep your engine nice and clean.

    If you have a lot of exhaust coming out in a steady stream and it is blue or black, stop accelerating immediately. There could be something wrong with your engine and you don't want to aggravate the problem by trying to burn off the carbon. Different colored smoke means different things. Blue, usually there's oil in your gas mixture. Black usually means you have bad valves in your engine. Take your vehicle to an auto shop and tell them about the color of the smoke and the amount. You probably have bad rings or need a valve job.

    # 2 cylinder misfire i changed # 2 injector plugs wires roter egr light is still on does the vent breather have any thing to do with this problem nissan frontier 2004 xe

    Is this the 2.4L? If so, I bet the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve passages are clogged. Likely has 3 of 4 EGR ports clogged, sending all EGR flow to the #2 cylinder. Check if it still has 8mm plugs in each runner for EGR transition passages. If so, remove those plugs to clean the EGR passages.

    Cleaning 2004 Ford Freestar EGR Valve

    The EGR valve is on top of the engine towards the driver's side. The assembly looks like a small canister with the top half crimped on, it has a large tube coming up from the exhaust, 1 electrical connector and red/black vacuum lines as well.

    My CEL was on and I was getting horrible gas mileage. First I disconnected the battery. On top of the EGR valve there is a small plastic cover. After carefully removing this (mine was brittle) you can remove the sofe grey foam air filter. Mine was very dirty, I cleaned it with alcohol, let it dry and put it back on. I also removed all the electrical and vacuum lines and sprayed them with mass air flow sensor cleaner.

    After getting it all together and reconnecting the battery the check engine light is off. Today I will drive it and see if the gas mileage has improved.

    SEL code P0401 (2004 Mitsubishi Galant 2.4L)

    Check for

    vacuum leaks on intake manifold,

    the air tube between the air filter.

    intake manifold vacuum hose.

    ===
    clean throttle plate with Berryman carburator cleaner

    SEE sample picture HERE
    ===

    Also remove carbon built up behind the EGR valve and the EGR passage tube.

    ===

    Vacuum leak WILL offset the intended 14.7 to 1 air fuel ratio.

    More un-metered air (leaks) will lean out the fuel mixture.

    Use small amount of Berryman carb clearer at potential air leak area will help you identify trouble spot.

    At idle,just spray and listen for the RPM surge.

    The in-rush of carb clearer will increase the RPM on the motor.

    Record the problem spot(s) and address it later.

    ===

    EGR carbon built up require 2+ hours to clean from start to finish.

    You will need a new EGR base gasket before your start.

    Locate and remove the EGR valve after the vehicle is cool down.

    Carefully record the connector and vacuum line (for older vehicle) location by drawing an easily to follow diagram.

    Remove the EGR valve.

    Inspect the location of the carbon built-up inside the valve and the EGR passage tube.

    SOAK these areas with WD-40 spary.

    You will need a small screwdriver,cloth hanger and lot of newspaper and time to get this cleaning done right.

    RE-SOAK the carbon and let it sit for over-night will also help.

    One the last round,pass a shop vacuum of the EGR valve and the passage pipe.

    Install the new EGR gasket and connectors.

    Allow the vehicle to warm up outdoor to burn up any remaining WD-40.

    Take it for a test drive.

    EGR Code

    The EGR valve is located in the front right of the motor, slightly below the alternator. It is about the size of a large bottle of pills with an attachment on it.
    First, unlock the air filter cover and remove the air filter. Place a screwdriver in the ring sticking out above the air filter box below the windshield trim piece to hold up the air filter cover up and out of the way. The air filter box sits on three holders with rubber ends. Grasp the air filter box with both hands and lift straight up off the holders and out of the engine compartment. This will give you a clear view of the EGR valve and room to work as well. Next, remove the wiring harness by sliding the red tab on the connector out of it's centered, locked position. Then remove the connector by pulling it away from the EGR valve. The EGR valve has 4 bolts. 2 are 8mm and the other 2 are 10mm. Remove all 4 bolts, being careful not to drop or lose thegaskets on either end of the EGR valve. Removing these bolts is best done with a 1/4" ratchet with deep-well sockets or regular sockets and a small extension. Remove the EGR valve and either replace with a new one or spray inside thoroughly with carbeurator cleaner to free up the plunger action inside. This will break up the carbon on the inside, allowing the plunger that is in the valve to move freely, which is the likely cause if the problem. After soaking, it may be necessary to use a screwdriver to break free and exercise the plunger. Place the tip of screw driver inside the opening in center of the EGR valve on move the plunger in and out. This may be difficult, so use spray liberally. Wipe carbon deposits off any area the will touch the gaskets and clean off excess spray. Re-install EGR valve the same way it came off, making sure to reattach wiring and secure. Note: If a check-engine light is on prior to replacing the EGR valve, disconnect the positive terminal on the battery and wait 30 seconds for the computer to reset itself. Reconnect the positive terminal and start engine. If problem persists, consult the dealer. hope this helps friend.

     All most forgot, if you do disconnect the battery, make sure your radio is turned off. If you leave your radio on when you disconnect the battery, your going to be prompted to enter the radio code to have it active again. Sorry my bad. keep me posted.

    yes the passages can be cleaned. They pass exhaust gas into the intake maniflod for reburning.

    It could be the DPFE that controls the EGR too. Diff. Pressure Feedback EGR.

    there is also a vacuum regulator valve and a solenoid too.
