I have a 2004 nissan altima and lost the keys so i called a lockssmith and he cut a new key and programed it to nissan specs and it started and when you turn the key off and try to restart wont star

Call Nissan they have to program your old keyless remote to your new cars ECU. Unless your a computer wiz you can do so research and get the program to do it yourself. Call Nissan first.
you're key lost programing,if you have extra key that is program use that key just to narrow down the problem,don't put the keys and you're cell phone in the same pocket incoming call will erase you're key. good luck
you HAVE to get it from a nissan dealer.the valet key has a tooth cut that is different,so that is does open the trunk or glovebox and there is a lockout switch in the glovebox.
but there is a chip in the key and the car will not start without it.
if you try to start the car a few times without the chip,the car will have to be towed to get the body control module re programmed .
You have to take it to the dealer to get the new key programmed. Try holding the old key near the ignition switch and see if it will start. That way at least you could drive it to the dealer instead of paying for a tow truck.
