Put jumper cables to the car like if you are going to jump start the car and then you might be able to open the door to the gas tank.

If I leave my 2001 Kia Optima running while I pump gas, it dies and is hard to start. After it does start it starts fine until I get gas again,

It is possible that the Vapor recovery system (VRS) does not like your opening the gas cap while running the car. It also doesn't like over filling the tank, as both of these situations cause it to think there is a vapor problem and sends a signal the computer making the fuel system freak out. and it is ussually not strong enough of a problem to set off the engine light. Have a diag done, and reset the code, if one is found. Most part stores will do this. If the VRS is severely compromised , then a new one is in need. Did you also note a small drop in MPG?

My gas tank will not open with the button in the drivers side door. How can I get my gas tank open?

Hello: look in the trunk on the side where the fuel door is. there may be a manual release handle to open it. Then check your fuse box(s) and see if you have any open fuses.

2006 Kia Optima/release button for fuel tank does not work

you may want to check all the fuses first.

then see if you can remove the switch and test it . if you dont know how to do this please take it to someone who can test this for you.
on an 06 kia with a problem like that i would just have the dealer fix it really quick for you.
the problem is the fuses or the switch for sure.
