I have a bmw X5 2002 and my fuel guage works sometimes and then not, I was informed that this was due to the wrong quality of fuel ??
Anyone have any ideas as BMW dont seem to know.
ITs nothing atall to do with the fuel!!
some people ?????
check the fuel sender wire for a loose connector at the sender unit on the fuel tank its usaully located on the top of tank in the trunk or could be located on the side of tank [depends on the manufacturer]
cheers Rob.

Most likely the float in your fuel tank is bad. if the float isn't working correctly your fuel gauge will show empty, put your fuel light on, or sometimes change fuel gauge dramatically. i don't know your model specifically however the float is usually part of the fuel pump as well. Your problem can also be caused just by a bad fuse (if a seperate fuse powers the float than the pump), power or negative wire disrupting the float information to the computer.
I would sugest when the temp gauge goes up you are actually earthing the wire for the temp guage. I think you have entered the wrong harness for the wires & you have connected the radio to your guages. Remove radio & reconnect wires where they were before.
i believe he means how can he fix the fuel gauge not working problem not the running out of gas. since we already know why that happened (didnt know he was out of gas due to broken fuel gauge) theres only a few things it could be. the gauges power source or ground could be corroded or broken, the guage itself is broken or the sending unit is worn out or the wiring is faulty or broken to it.
The guage stopped working, because a code set , possibly due to a faulty fuel sending unit, or a wiring issue. This would neeed to be scan tested for the current code. After repair is made, and the code is cleared, the guage will work again. Thanks...
if temp, does not work, it may be the tempurature sending unit. for fuel guage it is usually a bad wire to tank or the sending unit in tank. check wire and ground to tank first. good luck!!
It kind of sounds like the Anti-Slosh Module. The fuel gauge is connected to the fuel gauge sender through the Anti-Slosh Module. The sender is a variable resistor connected to the float in the fuel tank which determines the amount of fuel in the tank Anti-Slosh Module. The Anti-Slosh Module provides a delay circuit to the fuel gauge which prevents the fuel gauge from fluctuating due to excessive movement of gas in the fuel tank.
The Anti-Slosh Module is part of the instrument cluster and to replace it, you will need to replace the instrument cluster. I had to do one when I worked at Ford on one of their cars.
Gauges reads as follow
