Hi Terry Ward, I want to help you with your question, what engine?
Ok its a 89 car you own, seen on other post.
    or ask like this,
I have 89 4.0L USA car and what other flywheels fit. and work. they need to fit and the CKP must WORK.
The jeep online pages show you the p/n
and you can look them up. and see all cars it fits. (be a range of jeeps)

What engine, I toss my engine coin and land on 4.0L

10 long years, (hopeless really)
first off the 89 runs a FRENCh RENIX ecu, EFI injection
so the 1998 does not use this ECU ever ,that means all that CKP sensor stuff
is ALL DIFFERENT. the tone wheel marks are NOT THE SAME.

jeep dealer pages show you what fits. ever think to try jeep.?

this years 1988 to 1998 are turbulent years, 1996 is OBD2 and big change then 89 year, there.

  1. The Chrysler buy out.
  2. and EPA rules.
Scary no? should be....
see link and this (generalized, spec. cars and years, vary, usa)
  • 1986 - Renix TBI available on Jeep 2.5 L four-cylinder engines. (early EFI, digital , not analog like relic VW's, in the past 1970s era) All Renix is NON OBD systems. up to 1990 inclusive)
  • 1987 - The new Renix controlled 4.0 L six-cylinder engine was rated at 173 hp (129 kW; 175 PS) and 220 lb·ft (298 N·m) of torque.
  • 1988 - 4.0 L output increased to 177 hp) and 224 lb·ft of torque now, due to higher compression ratio.
  • 1989 -90 Changed to French Renix MPFI. (multipoint fuel injection) now called MPI.
  • 1991 - 1st OBD, Chrysler Corporation system ( the above Renix control system is upgraded (trash canned), to USA OBD-I-compliant control electronics, the Chrysler HO EFI) with a working (SHOCK?) CEL lamp. + key trick works now.
  • (and SBEC-I or II ECU's 91-92 years) The key trick works starting in 1991.
  • 1993 are OBD1, and all good over the counter tools support it.
  • 1996 are OBD2, USA compliant, (EPA) and now all scan tools work here, (EPA law dictated that) and USA invented OBD2,

Ever try jeep? online, just look them up your self for all years
and learn what part numbers match.

at the least , the ckp slots are different.
but can also be, the French clutch has its own depth and mount patterns.(metric for sure)
to me, id go with the correct fly.
and avoid reverse engineering all that.

i have buddy, he stops at nothing,
to the point of welding up holes
and cutting them like he wants.
so, what fits for him is very different.
he puts V8s in rice burners.

SOURCE: My Jeep cherokee not starting

The teeth on the flywheel need to be close enough for the starter motor to catch them when it engages. If you removed it and now the starter just free-spins when starting then you may have installed the flywheel backwards and the starter motor cannot reach the teeth on the flywheel. If its making a loud grinding or pinging sound you may need to manually turn the engine a bit to align the flywheel.

My 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4x4 will stall out while driving. What happens is the RPM's drop to 0, the steering and brakes lock up and I stall out. I used to be able to pop it into neutral and start it...

between the engine and transmission at the top of transmission there will be a sensor that is held on with one of the transmission mounting bolts. ( this is a crankshaft position sensor) this sensor is famous for this type problem. a good friend of mine has been a jeep tech for 20yrs and he has told me that he has seen this problem where the sensor ,fires off the flywheel. and when the engine gets to operating temp. the flywheel will shrink a small amount. enough for the sensor not to get a accurate reading. and the ignition shuts off. he has said to always to replace the crankshaft sensor. and if im not mistaken there' s a couple of different one 's that this could have. one, or two mounting bolts is the differance

Will a 2000 4.0 from a jeep cherokee sport replace a 2000 4.0 in a jeep grand cherokee?

Yes...both are identical. Only thing I'd check further on is if one has a manual transmission you may have a different flywheel flange or will need a pilot bushing if the vehicle getting the engine is stick.
If both are automatics...no problem at all.

Ive got a 94 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 liter i put a 93 4.0 liter and caint get it to fire but it has different distributor

i think you pretty much answered your own question there. Use the '94 distributor in the other engine and make sure that all the sensors are in place, connected and all for a 94. Also check the crank position sensor. If left in place during install, they can get damaged if the flywheel hits it. (hope you matched the flywheels too...if different, it will not run.

Will a engine out of 1997 jeep cherokee fit in a1994 jeep cherokee 4.0 engines

As long as both are 4.0 engines it will work. You will probably have to change some sensors and use the wire harness from you old engine. Also you may have to change the intake. You may also have to change the flex plate or flywheel from the old engine. Be sure to double check this stuff. Also the engine mounts might be different but they bolt on so you can change them with the old ones.

Hi i have a Jeep Cherokee sport 1992 and i will replace the engine for another engine of a Jeep Comanche eliminator 1990 it is the same thing but i want to know if i have to change anything? and i want to...

90 and 92 should interchange but you may need to change sensors if the connectors are different. I suggest that you remove the crank sensor 'till the engine is in place unless you are swinging the trans with the engine (it sits very close to the flywheel and can get damaged) Bosch plugs work fine in that engine (I have five of them and have Bosch in all) Only thing that may be different is the exhaust manifold but that will be obvious if it is.

Will a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine work

Computer hookup should be the same and physically it's the same engine. Only thing I can think of to check on is the engine mounts (not sure but there may have been a change there. Also, make sure you keep the same flywheel position in relation to the crankshaft and that both flywheels are identical in every way including tooth count.
