This unit is what is called a firetube boiler , well 1st you need to determine what is causing the smell , is it bunrt fuel u smell or unbunrt fuel you smell , looking around the unit with a torch light (bright one) your looking for any sign of a wet or shiney spot on it or floor around it , this probally is a fuel leak if you find one your gonna need to have that fixed by a qualify'd tech , next need to obtain a carbon monoxide detector , this will be able to test for a component of burnt fuels if its allowed to enter dwelling , there not expensive and anyone burning a fuel to heat there house should have one anyway! hold and slowly pass detector around the heater while its running and observing any readings its given off to determine direction of any problem spots

Exhaust smell coming in from vent

In most cases fumes coming into the cabin thru the vents is from a leak near the engine. If the exhaust is leaking around the engine it should be fairly loud.

2004 VW Golf, smelling fumes. The fumes come from the vents. The smell is NOT there when I have the heat, AC or circulation on. I'm confused because I do not hear anything different and would assume it...

I emphasize with you on this problem. If you are smelling fumes you are inhaling car "exhaust" which is extremely dangerous as you know. I have a 1999 Passat that had a "fume" issue that baffled me for over a year. Your description of the conditions that you smell the fumes may not be complete enough for me to definitively say what your problem is but I will tell you what I experienced and discovered on my car. I only smelled the fumes when my heat or AC was on and the car was NOT moving forward. Also, if the AC recirculate button was on I didn't smell the problem as bad. So, what I found was that the car's emission control piping was leaking the exhaust fumes that bypass the pistons and go into the crankcase. These fumes are normally piped back into the intake manifold to be re-burned to reduce emissions. With a completed disintegrated rubber emissions pipe coming off the engine block, the fumes entered into the engine compartment which is sealed from the interior of the car. So, how did the fumes get in my car? Well, when waiting at a red light and with the heat or AC on (no recirculate) the fumes would fill the engine compartment and overflow out the wheel wells and wrap over the hood to the intake vents (near the wiper blades) of the car's interior air system. If the recirculate button is pressed with the AC on, the car's interior air (no exterior air) is recirculated inside the car to cool it faster and I didn't smell the fumes as bad. Also on windy days the fumes didn't get a chance to wrap over the hood and get into the intake vents. Because of the unique conditions that had to occur in order to smell or not smell the fumes it was a difficult problem to solve. By the way, the disintegrated rubber pipe was almost impossible to see and there is no real reference material to read that describes the location and depiction of the emissions plumbing. I hope this helps you!

GAS SMELL WHEN HEATER IS ON WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM

Usually means there is a fuel leak in the engine compartment, and the heater is pulling the fumes into the car thru the vents under the windshield.

Smell of gas and whistling sound

Its all connected.
The computer uses a solenoid to vent the fumes from the tank when the engine is running.
The vapor canister holds the fumes until the vent valve is opened.
The computer tried to vent the tank and something went wrong.
It could be from the excessive heat or something with the venting system.
A mechanic would test the venting system.

Fumes coming through the air vent

did you have the manifold checked as it can crack, when at full temp ie say moving along at 40 50 the manifold will open the crack and exhaust gas will come out of the area, it can also be the gasket is warn out from expansion and contraction , when engine hot it will expand the and when it cools down it contracts, as does in any metal system. the manifold is the first area to goes if you have the smell of exhaust gas in the cab. as its higher and hotter than the cat

MPV 2002. Black particles come out from air vents

I get the feeling this is the first time you've used the heater? Its probably accumulated dust. As long as you don't get a burning smell or smell exhaust fumes you should be ok after a few hours use.

Hello I own a 2004 Volvo and have fume smells

Most likely the catalytic converter temporary plugged and or the fresh air door jammed and allowed smell from the engine compartment came it. The catalytic converter can come loose and going around a turn it may plug it temporary and blow out the exhaust gaskets and cause the smell.

Code 446 comes on and I smell gas

if that was the code for the purge vent solenoid i would say it is bad since you smell fumes. because that solenoid allows the vacuume from the engine while it is running to pull the excess fumes from the fuel tank and burn them off inside the engine. also might want to check lines under the hood associated with the solenoid to make sure excess air pressure from the fumes building up didn't blow a vac. line off. i would also check the condition of your fuel cap, if it doesn't seal good it could also cause a similar problem.
