Quick fix - flush and change gearbox oil with new filter. may have to do couple of times- sounds like it has never been serviced. check sump of auto for foreign matter if oil red ok if brown - worn out.

if your refering to the auto gearbox then sensors inside gearbox .Normally when this fault code shows a nd gearchanges not quite right i drain gearbox clean filter in the sump then refill ,run angine in drive on jacks and then check level again ,then again after a 10 min run .

Its best to use the one that came with the car because the computer send a codes to the engine

you need to get the fault codes out of the engine control module and the transmission control module ie ecm and tcm with a eobd fault code reader to help sort this one . common probs are faulty jatco auto gearbox (rubbissh gearbox) poss engine managment sensor failures or even a broken/corroded wire or connector, good luck,.

If it's auto, get it scanned for error codes before you do anything with the wires. The codes will guide your repair better.

Check the gearbox wiring and solenoids, if all fine than it might be internal gearbox fault.

Have a BMW certified mechanic check the cars computer I had a similar problem on a 528i the chip for the transmission had gone bad and bridging the chip allowed the transmission to shift properly if this is the case replace the chip.

The engine number on the G16A/B series should be stamped on the left hand side of the block, at the rear (just before the gearbox bellhousing), on a flat area immediately above the sump. As for the auto/manual problem, either someone stuffed up at the time of initial registration, or it's been changed. Your Suzuki dealer should be able to tell you how your VIN was originally specified, and there is a method of telling from the build information number on the VIN plate, but I don't have that info handy. Could find it if you really needed it.

hi there, needs to be the same number. computers need to match. tourque converters are different from 2.0/2.2 to the 2.5 engines. also shift points are different between models so needs to talk to the dash perfectly. hope this helps.
