How do you know if a piston ring has gone on a Ford Puma?

Bought a Ford Puma in a garage, paid a deposit, but the next day they phoned to say a piston ring has gone and I can't have it. The said they shone a torch in and could see where it had gone. Is this right?
I suspect somebody came along and offered them more cash for the car, as it was such a good price.
Can you tell if a piston ring has gone, by listening to the engine or driving the car? If so, I'll go and see it and call their bluff.
Advice much appreciated, thanks!

You cannot see a broken piston ring without taking the engine apart. If there is a broken piston ring you may or may not hear or see any evidence of it. If the piston itself is broken you will hear, see and maybe smell it with burning oil.

you need to have a compression test done on all cylinders, you cannot look into the cylinder and see a ring, you cannot tell if you are looking at a piece of pistn ring by the oil plug, maybe some shavings. tell them you want a compression test done on the engine to determine if you are lossing compression and burning access oil because you have a bad ring.

Inspecting the piston rings requires that the engine be removed from the vehicle and disassembled. I don't know if this was done, but if it was, it sure was done quickly. Hope this helps and good luck.

you do not have to remove the engine, have a compression test done on all cylinders.

Sometimes in the oil drain screw the factory fits a small magnet to fishing the small metal pieces from the engine oil.perhaps they saw there apiece of a broken ring when they changed the engine oil.

SOURCE: warning lights

You need to have your brakes inspected by a professional. The lights indicate that ABS and traction control are not working...although brakes will work without these features, a humming noise can indicate more problems to come.

I have been told my piston rings have gone does that mean i have to change the whole engine or can it be fixed

You didn't specify the # of cylinders or the make/model. Piston rings are replaceable, BUT without knowing how they were tested I'm speculating, They all should be around 90-100 psi. (Pounds per square inch) The only thing I would add, this is supposing the head gasket and valves are okay. Even with that the pressure in all the cylinders should all be within 20 psi of each other. A dealer would scare me. They may want to rebuid or replace the engine. Being a 2011, unless it has high mileage and no other problems, this can be caused by a bad oil pump. If you or someone you know can think of a garage that has rebuilt engines, see what they say. With the right knowledge and the right testing equipment, it is more likely that you can get an idea what all can be wrong. (Piston rings that are bad usually results in a blue color exaust.) After getiing my puma back?the engine now smokes and there no compression in number 2 piston is my engine dead?

You have this listed under 2001 Ford Focus, but say it's a Puma and also reference the #2 piston. Based on that, I'm going to assume you mean an Arctic Cat Puma snowmobile. If so, Pop the head off (4 nuts) and if it's the gasket, you'll see where it's blown out. Get a new gasket, pop the head back on and tighten it back up. If it's the piston or rings, you'll be able to tell when you pull the head. If the piston has a hole or melted down from a lean condition, you'll see it. If the rings are shot, you may see some scoring on the cylinder wall. You might also be able to tell by the spark plug. Pull it and check for a silvery residue. If the piston burned, it will sometimes leave a silver (aluminum) film on the plug. A whiteish plug means lean which could cause the head gasket or piston problem as well. A dark (brownish, blackish) plug means it was running rich and your piston "should" be ok. Again, best bet would be to pull the head and check everything out.

Smoke from exhaust tapping from engine!!!! Ford Focus V reg

Greyish black smoke with a smell of burning oil means only one thing, bad rings on the piston. Major engine rebuild.

No.1 cylinder is misfirering

i have known some cars, ford in particular, to shed carbon from the piston top periodically, like peeling paint. some of this can get stuck under a valve seat with resulting loss of compression. i do not know why this happens. alternatively, town running deposits which used to be very common still occur sometimes. soft carbon deposits created on the spark plug during low speed (town) driving can become baked on rendering the spark plug useless if the engine speed/load is increased too quickly instead of being burned off which usually happens.
