'90 Jag XJ6; cranks/won't fire, possible, minimal/nominal, contaminated/alternative fuel in line, impeding proper combustion. Starting fluid encourages firing, but air filter access horizontal & remote; insufficient for efficacy & spraying enough causes puddles which ignite within the run!
To remove contaminated fuel , pull a fuel line of the fuel manifold and run the pump for a few seconds
not firing is sensor , immobilizer , ignition module problem but you stat that it fires on starter fluid so that cannot be right
starter fluid is a d good way of damaging the engine
a better way is to find and fix the fault
now to try and sort out what you are saying
it is cranking so the starter is good
it tries to run on starter fluid so there is spark to the plugs
it will not run and that indicates a lack of fuel to the injectors
a lack of fuel indicates
1--- a bad fuel pump
2--a vacuum in ht e fuel system from the tank not venting properly(EVAP system)
3--- fuel pressure regulator not working and providing pressure to the injectors
4--- bad injectors --- need cleaning
dump the starter fluid , buy a workshop manual and fix the problem properly
Testimonial: "Thanks Bill, Just need to, definitively, ID any/all/entire span of the fuel line (UNDER THE HOOD) & chiefly, that valve there-on (which I'm not seeing & that's supposedly there for attachment of gauge to read fuel-line pressure) and also, any other, possible/easily & accessible fuel line connections to blead just that section of the fuel line. I'm not seeing ANY part of (what am guessing has to be the most visible portion) the fuel line that doesn't appear to be, primarily metal & with solid, metal parts there-along that resemble fuel filters, excepting, all visible connections, if any, seem to be sealed or crimped couplings not made for disconnection nor even cutting & reconnecting as one could with a hose & hose clamps, etc. Also, saw a vid showing an alternative starting fluid access/spray point on a small/mid-size domestic model, that, of course, I also can't definitively locate on this 1990 Jag XJ6l. The access point was simply disconnecting the larger of two hoses connected to the brake booster & spraying into the hose, toward engine (which makes sense as that hose's air-intake must create or assist w/ vacuum for brake booster), but, of course, don't see any such hose options nor similar options on what I believe is the same part on my 1990 Jag XJ6. At this point, I may try ether directly in to spark plug chambers but still would prefer, first bleeding even a few ounces of that section of fuel line closest to engine so proper fuel is there to draw on & maintain the combustion cycle. Guess I'll keep up the search for a clear, engine-part diagram or pic or schematic (ANY such with CLEAR label) would be the great, big help for which I'd be most grateful! in what I think is a minor problem stopping this 1990 Jaguar XJ6 engine from firing, & that I'm taking great care to stop from becoming (or creating!) an unnecessary, avoidable, much more complicated & expensive, larger problem. And thanks for any help toward that end! Jim, In Pittsburgh ;-)"
