SOURCE: crank angle sensor location

The crank sensor is always located next to the crankshaft pulley. it will be inserted into the block with the top part of the housing half way out. you cant miss the wires leading into the tip of the housing next to the crank shaft pulley.

SOURCE: high idle stalls at lights code for crank sensor

Crankshaft and Camshaft Position Sensors Camshaft Position Sensor Engine timing is determined from the relationship between the crankshaft and camshaft. This relationship is maintained by a timing chain or timing belt. The Engine Management System does not control engine timing but it does monitor the relative position and speed of these shafts by monitoring signals generated by sensors. The Engine Management System (EMS) uses signals generated by the camshaft position sensor to synchronize fuel injection to the valve sequence and for the on-board diagnostic procedure for misfire detection. The EMS energizes the injector at or near the time the intake valve opens. For misfire diagnosis, the EMS compares the number of camshaft sensor reference pulses and the number of crankshaft position sensor reference pulses received. If the EMS receives an incorrect number of pulses Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC’s) should be stored in the EMS.
If the camshaft position sensor or circuit is faulty most engines will start. Some engine management systems will then default to a pre-programmed injector firing sequence. All injectors may be energized simultaneously or all of the injectors on one bank may be energized at the same time. If the CMP data is required for misfire detection and reliable CMP data is not present misfire detection would probably be suspended.
Related Symptoms The following symptoms can be caused by an intermittent wiring connection or faulty signal to the EMS:

  • Extended crank time with a cold engine
  • Intermittent rough running
  • Unstable idle
  • Bucking
  • Hesitation
  • Stumble
  • Chuggle
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Stalling on acceleration
Crankshaft Position Sensor Engine speed is a very important input to the Engine Management System (EMS). Crankshaft speed and position are the basis for many calculations made by the computer. Crankshaft position values are transmitted to the computer by pickup coils also known as Permanent Magnet (P/M) generators, hall-effect sensors or optical sensors. The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) also known as engine speed sensor is located in close proximity to the crankshaft.
In addition the EMS uses minute variations in the CKP sensor data to determine engine misfire. The EMS uses this information in conjunction with the camshaft position sensor to perform misfire diagnostics.
Related Symptoms: No Start/Intermittent Start Condition – Can be caused by a faulty crankshaft position sensor due to loose connections, bad grounds, high resistance in the circuit, or opens in the circuit

SOURCE: crankshaft sensor location on 2001 oldsmobile

. Its above the starter going into the side of the block. (front side of the engine) Disconnect the battery. Remove the starter. Remove the wIre CONNECTOR plug to the sensor. The sensor has 1 bolt holding it in. Remove the bolt, you may have to wiggle the sensor at the base a bit as you pull it out. Replace, and make sure it is pushed in all of the way. Replace the bolt, wire plug, starter, reconnect the battery.

97 Oldsmobile 88 after driving once motor is shut off will not crank until cool, had the control module tested it came back good, replace fuel pressure switch and still will not crank until cool?

You will need to replace the crank angle/position sensor near the crank pulley. A photo of the sensor is attached. The sensors wear out due to heat and cold cycles and internal corrosion.

Oldsmobile security light

On your 3800 Olds motor, the crank position sensor can be the problem...located on the front of the motor harmonic balancer...but first try cleaning the Idle Air Control Valve...located in the air intake assembly...remove and spray clean with injector spray cleaner...clean the spring also...you can replace the IAC with a new one for about $35. Be sure to clean out the chamber too...wipe dry. Hope this helps.

1999 oldsmobile cutlass computer will not communicate with car

When the motor was replaced , was the original PCM changed as well ? Did you have the anti-theft system programmed . Theft - system light on -DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes are stored . Need a factory or professional scan tool read these codes . The other computers on the vehicle will communicate . BCM
Important: Due to component variability, the vehicle theft deterrent (VTD) system must have the learn procedure performed regardless, if the vehicle starts on the first ignition cycle after a VTD repair.
All codes in the theft deterrent module must be cleared for a relearn.
The vehicle theft deterrent system is designed in order to prevent vehicle theft by disabling the fuel injectors unless the lock cylinder is correctly engaged by a mechanical key. The theft deterrent system uses the following 4 components for theft prevention:
• The lock cylinder
• The ignition switch
• The body control module (BCM)
• The powertrain control module (PCM)
When starting the engine, the PCM searches for a password from the BCM through the Class 2 serial data circuit. If the password is not recognized or not present, the PCM will disable the engine. Two modes of tamper detection are provided:
• No password received
The engine will start and stall quickly. SECURITY telltale will flash on the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and then stay ON steady.
• Incorrect or disable password received (More than 3 invalid passwords are received)
The engine is disabled for at least 10 minutes and the SECURITY telltale will illuminate solid on the IPC during the 10 minutes.
After the vehicle has passed theft detection, the PCM will continue normal operation.

How to put on a crank sensor for a 2.4 engine of a 2001 oldsmobile alero?

The crankshaft position sensor on your vehicle goes through the engine block and is held by a single mounting bolt.
Disconnect the electrical connector.
Remove the mounting bolt securing the sensor to the engine block.
Using a "twisting back and forth" motion, remove the sensor from the engine block.
NOTE: it is common for these to be coated with carbon deposits that may cause them to stick and make them difficult to remove. Be careful to pull STRAIGHT out and use the twisting motion mentioned above, to avoid breaking the sensor off inside the engine block.
The crankshaft position sensor is located on the left side of the engine block near the oil filter.

We need to reset the computer on a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

HI there if the scan tool you are using will not reprogram the theft module the try the 10 min relearn

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
  3. Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
  4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
  5. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. Important: The vehicle learns the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
  6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password.
  7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles

Crank shaft sensor

I have 10 years experience in a Nissan dealership and I know without a shadow of a doubt that the Crankshaft Position Sensor is NOT located next tp the crank pulley... it is rather at the other end of the engine near where the transmission bellhousing bolts to the engine block. It is on the side toward the firewall near the bottom. Even if you can get the vehicle on a lift and get under it, you can't really see it... It's more of a feel thing... There was a campaign (recall) on these engines to replace Crank Position and also Cam Postion sensors. Check with your dealer- the campaign might be open. You will need your VIN number when you call.
