Have you checked compression on more than one cyclinder? I once broke a camshaft on an old truck and it died instantly. Things looked normal at two of the cylinders but not on the others.

if you someone that no a little mechanic work ask they to put a socket over the bolt on the crank shaft pully to see if it turns ift seems as if you got a bad motor
Being an 88 it is probably worth about 1k-1500. But if you get it running, and it lasts even one year, then the lack of a car payment would be well worth it. Your net savings could easily double what you have in it. I am driving a 1992 pontiac sunbird which granted I do all of my own work but at 300,000 miles, and nine years of service, the car owes me nothing.
