1992 dodge spirit with codes 12,25,33,51 the problem im having with the car is that its idling really high, sounds like a jet engine. It used to do this then when left idling it would idle down and drive fine. But now its idling high and driving itself along, I have to sit on the brake pedal to maintain speed. The car is a standard and it seems to be driving in 3rd gear when its in second and 4th gear when in 3rd.

The problem is the idle air control solenoid. If not that there is a vacuum leak somewhere in the intake. It's getting too much air in other words. Hope it helps.

The 2.2L 4 cyl with and without turbo needs a rectangular
the 3L 6 cyl needs rectangular
the 2.5L 4 cyl needs round.

You can go to Advance Auto parts or Auto Zone and they will check the code for free. They can give you an idea from the code as what might be causing it.If the code comes and goes, It probably will probably not strand you. Robert
First no matter what check the oil level and then if it's a high rev tapping you need to allow the oil to flow through the engine block to try to coat and settle your valves.
But if it's really " knocking " sounds like your lifters and rocker arms are allowing your piston rods to clatter and that needs to be looked into fast.
the problem sounds like it is not getting enough of fuel. check or replace fuel filter to see if this helps, also make sure fuel pump is pumping the fuel at the right pressure. have pressure checked if need be. if not enough fuel a vehicle will run at idle, but stall under pressure.
