about the only thing i can think of that will do this while trying to start is that starter remains engauged after engine starts , the starter motor draws a lot of power ,the most of any item in your truck. and if it remains running after start the alternator/voltage reg supplys it's power instead of the battery , and one other thing your model year (and a few past that) has a common problem with a little thing called a bendix inside the starter sticking due to carbon build up and yep the symptom of this is the starter runs on after you let the key go but there can be other causes of this happening so all reasons need to be looked at

-Lot of things cause over heating:
-Thermostat never open or not fully open, Clogged radiator, belt that spin water pump is too lose.

-Possibly lose object stuck inside vent tunnel.

-Make sure the system is not clog. (flush with garden water hose in both direction)
-Make sure the radiator's fins are not clog. This is the biggest problem that the Mechanic can't figure out.
*If the fins are clog, Best thing to clean is use presure washer. Carefull ! Do not aim too closed and angle. You'll damage the fins)

This will take care the problem.

You mean you get power but when you start . No thing...?
If so. Make sure shift handle is in " Park"
Or battery cable to starter loose or corrosion.

My wife has a 97 town and country. For about 2 weeks the instrument panel
was going out then coming back on. A couple days ago it got bad. The van would start and run only several seconds then the engine would shut down.
I took the Instrument panel out and it started and stayed running. I pulled the
PC board found the bad Soder connections and resodered them. Problem
was gone and the P1698 code erased. Best thing is it did not cost me anything and the van is fixed !

-I don't think that replace fluid and gasket will cause that.
It could be some things new. Not by the mechanic.

Hi Pullerwife,

I have a few suggestions for you,

First of all, check your air filter, make sure its clean, not clogged, and doesn't need to be changed.

I don't know how handy you are, but if you are fairly handy, check the idler pulley bearings, if your not, have a shop check it out, as a last resort.

Power steering pump/fluid being low is also a possibility, but thats usually more of a lower pitched whine then what you describe.

You say once the vehicle is warmed up, the whining stops. Does Weather seem to be a factor as well?
