Check your overflow bottle for any signs of exhaust fumes, the coolant for any signs of oil contamination and the oil for any signs of an emulsion forming.
Overheating is often a sign of a blown headgasket with a leak between one (or more) of the cylinders and the coolant passage in the head and block.
If ignored, when the oil looses too much of its lubricating value due to water mixed with it, the engine can seize up and then it gets very expensive.
If you want to embark on doing your own maintenance, I highly recommend you invest $20 US in a Haynes manual for your car which will contain all of the info you need on things you can do at home.
