This info might be in your owners manual? I use gloves to handle bulb, not bare fingers. Sometimes the oil from your skin can cause a hot spot on the bulb.

We own a 1997 ford f250 4x4 and the head light

The headlight bulb is a fairly simple replace. If involves removing the old light by reaching behind the hedlight where the socket with the wires goes into the headlight. It usually is just a quarter turn or a squeeze and turn kind of motion. Once the socket is out of the headlight then you will be able to simply pull the bulb out and replace with a new one...NOTE...do not touch the new headlight bulb with your fingers...we have an oil that is naturally produced in our skin and can make your new bulb fail prematurally. Use a paper towel to install the new bulb or a gloved hand.

I want to change my headlights on a 1997 grand marquis

The headlights are a sealed unit. All you can change is the bulb, which is done from the rear of the headlight. You squeeze the nylon lock on the bulb socket, turn it counter clock wise, and pull the socket out. Then pull the bulb, and replace it. Be careful not to touch the new bulb with bare fingers. The natural oil on your fingers will cause premature bulb failure.

No headlamps on 97 Mountaineer.

Buy 1 bulb and insert in each socket one at a time. If the low beam does not work on either side you know it is not because of the bulb. Then you will have 1 extra bulb for emergencies. Ask at autoparts about a headlight relay for lowbeam. When you wrote that highbeams work on pullback you did not say if they stay on high. You have "Flash to Pass" for highbeam which can be a different circuit. The automatic headlight switch is yet another set of contacts to go bad. You should set "auto" to off so you are not fighting this feature when testing. Good Luck
