What is the correct placement, exactly, on the oil pump pulley on a 1986 Yugo GV, of the timing mark?

I have a 1991 Yugo GV that I bought for the chassis, it is being converted to electric. I believe this motor and prehaps other items may fit the Fiat X1/9 also.

this is a complex fix. if the timing belt is off, you will have to align both of the cams (V6??) to their respective notches on the back plate that protects the belt. You must also align the crank shaft to TDC, top dead center. Put the belt on (with tensioner off) then put tensioner on and release allen key. turn the engine by hand or using the starter two full rotations, the notches on the tops of the cam pulleys should be perfectly alligned with the notches on the back plate. if not, you missed a notch in the wrong spot and have to try again.

i've done this twice, once on a lexus es250 v6, and again on my 94 camry, its one of the hardest things i've ever done when repairing cars. be patient, have a friend help, don't get frustrated. if you really cant get it, have a mechanic come to your house and drop him a few bills to help you. you'll be glad you did

  1. Remove the timing belt covers using procedures described earlier in this section.
  2. If not done as part of the cover removal, rotate the crankshaft clockwise to the TDC/compression position for No. 1 cylinder.
  3. Loosen the timing belt idler pulley to relieve the tension on the belt, move the pulley away from the belt and temporarily tighten the bolt to hold it in the loose position.
  4. Make matchmarks on the belt and both pulleys showing the exact placement of the belt. Mark an arrow on the belt showing its direction of rotation.
  5. Carefully slip the timing belt off the pulleys.
  6. dont move cam, with belt off it warns.
  7. Remove the idler pulley bolt, pulley and return spring.
  8. Use an adjustable wrench mounted on the flats of the camshaft to hold the cam from moving. Loosen the center bolt in the camshaft timing pulley and remove the pulley.
  9. Check the timing belt carefully for any signs of cracking or deterioration. Pay particular attention to the area where each tooth or cog attaches to the backing of the belt. If the belt shows signs of damage, check the contact faces of the pulleys for possible burrs or scratches.
  10. Check the idler pulley by holding it in your hand and spinning it. It should rotate freely and quietly. Any sign of grinding or abnormal noise indicates replacement of the pulley.
  11. Check the free length of the tension spring. Correct length is 38.5mm measured at the inside faces of the hooks. A spring which has stretched during use will not apply the correct tension to the pulley; replace the spring.
  12. If you can test the tension of the spring, look for 8.4 lbs. of tension at 50mm of length. If in doubt, replace the spring.
  13. Reinstall the camshaft timing belt pulley, making sure the pulley fits properly on the shaft and that the timing marks align correctly. Tighten the center bolt to 43 ft. lbs.
  14. Before reinstalling the belt, double check that the crank and camshafts are exactly in their correct positions. The alignment mark on the end of the camshaft bearing cap should show through the small hole in the camshaft pulley and the small mark on the crankshaft timing belt pulley should align with the mark on the oil pump.
  15. Reinstall the timing belt idler pulley and the tension spring. Pry the pulley to the left as far as it will go and temporarily tighten the retaining bolt. This will hold the pulley in its loosest position.
  16. Install the timing belt, observing the matchmarks made earlier. Make sure the belt is fully and squarely seated on the upper and lower pulleys.
  17. Loosen the retaining bolt for the timing belt idler pulley and allow it to tension the belt.
  18. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn the crank clockwise 2 full revolutions from TDC to TDC. Insure that each timing mark realigns exactly.
  19. Tighten the timing belt idler pulley retaining bolt to 27 ft. lbs.
  20. Measure the timing belt deflection (Tool 23600 B or similar), looking for 5-6mm of deflection at 4.4 pounds of pressure. If the deflection is not correct, readjust the idler pulley by repeating steps 15 through 18.
  21. Remove the bolt from the end of the crankshaft.
  22. Install the timing belt guide onto the crankshaft and install the lower timing belt cover.
  23. Continue reassembly of the timing belt covers as outlined previously in this section.

2000 chevy s-10 blazer distributor placement

Hi Jerry,

Welcome to the club! Anybody who has never had this same problem has not worked much on cars! I say this because I have done the same thing several times.

Anyway, there are timing marks on the front crankshaft pulley and on the distributor. (see pictures)

You have to be sure that Number 1 piston is coming up on the compression stroke when you line up the mark on the front crank pulley with the indicator on the timing chain cover. To do this, remove the spark plug from #1cylinder and stick your finger in the hole. Have a helper "bump" the starter untill you feel the compression trying to push your finger out of the hole. Then use a wrench or socket on the crankshaft pulley bolts to get the marks lined up correctly.

If you look at the edge of your distributor with the cap removed, you will see two marks on the edge. One is an "8" and the other is a "6". when you drop the distributor into the hole, the distributor rotor needs to point directly at the "6" mark. (Since your Blazer is equipped with a 3.4L 6-Cyl. engine) (See Picture)

Sometimes the oil pump is not lined up properly to let the distributor drop all the way down in the correct position. There are two ways to handle this:

1. you can stick a LONG screwdriver down into the hole and try to rotate the oil pump into the correct position.

2. You can find the spot where the distributor WILL drop all the way down, then lift it back up and move it forward 1 tooth. the oil pump will also move 1 tooth and let the distributor drop again. Repeat this until the distributor drops into the proper position to get it lined up with the mark on the distributor.

Alternator is not charging the battery. wires good battery good and alternator good. Maybe its was not installed wright?

According to my information, your car has an external voltage regulator, meaning it is NOT part of the alternator. I would check to see if it has failed.

Need to know how to replace alternator on yugo 1989 gv

i havnt worked on a yugo in years....undo all 3 bolts on the front and the one at the back of the alt and remove(leave the belt in place if you want to)
then just lift it out,you will see that it has a long "arm"this is for belt adjustment when replacing the belt,to tension it. 1/2"play on the longest run.between pulleys..

Removal
  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Section 03-03 for the procedure.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) .
  1. Remove the generator drive belt, water pump and power steering pump drive belt, and the A/C compressor drive belt (if equipped). Refer to Section 03-05 for the removal procedure.
  1. If equipped, remove the three A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley bolts and the A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley.
  1. Remove the upper radiator hose bracket bolt.
  1. Loosen the two upper radiator hose clamps and remove the radiator hose bracket bolt. Remove the upper radiator hose (8260) and the upper radiator hose bracket from the vehicle.
  1. Remove the water bypass hose (8597) from between the thermostat housing and the water hose connection (8592) .
  1. Remove the main wiring harness from the upper engine front cover (6019) .
  1. Remove the eight upper engine front cover bolts and the upper engine front cover .
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  1. Remove the RH front wheel and tire assembly.
  1. Remove the four RH outer engine and transmission splash shield bolts and two screws and remove the RH outer engine and transmission splash shield (6775) .
  1. Use Strap Wrench 303-D055 (D85L-6000-A) or equivalent to hold the water pump pulley (8509) while removing the four water pump pulley bolts.
  1. Remove the water pump pulley from the water pump (8501) .
  1. Remove the crankshaft pulley (6312) . Refer to the procedure in this section.
  1. Remove the five lower engine front cover bolts and the lower engine front cover .
  2. Ensure that the timing marks between the crankshaft sprocket (6306) and the oil pump housing line up.
  3. NOTE: The directional arrow is necessary to ensure that the timing chain/belt (6268) can be reinstalled in the same direction.
  4. Loosen the timing chain/belt tensioner nut.
  5. Remove the timing chain/belt .

  6. Installation
    NOTE: Ensure that the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets (6256) and the seal plate are properly aligned. Ensure that the timing marks on the crankshaft sprocket and the oil pump housing are still aligned. NOTE: A new timing chain/belt has three white timing marks that indicate the correct timing positions of the camshafts (6250) and the crankshaft (6303) . These marks will help ensure that the engine (6007) is timed properly. When the engine is properly timed each white timing mark on the timing chain/belt will be aligned with the corresponding camshaft and crankshaft timing mark on the sprocket. Because the white timing marks are not evenly spaced you will need to refer to the following illustration for proper timing chain/belt placement. There should be 40 timing belt teeth between the timing marks of the front and rear camshaft sprockets and 43 teeth between the timing mark on the front camshaft sprocket and the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket .

    NOTE: Verify that the camshaft timing marks are aligned with the timing marks on the seal plate, and that the crankshaft sprocket timing mark is aligned with the timing mark on the oil pump (6600) .

    Install the timing chain/belt starting at the crankshaft sprocket and moving around to the camshaft sprocket following a counterclockwise path. Do not allow any slack in the timing chain/belt between the timing sprockets. After all of the timing marks are matched up with the timing chain/belt installed, slip the timing chain/belt onto the timing chain/belt tensioner .

How install timing belt 1993 1.8l eclipse

See Figures 1, 2 and 3
  1. If possible, position the engine so the No. 1 piston is at TDC.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the timing belt covers.
  4. Remove the timing (outer) belt tensioner and remove the outer timing belt.
  5. Remove the outer crankshaft sprocket and flange.
  6. Remove the silent shaft (inner) belt tensioner and remove the belt.

  1. Align the timing marks of the silent shaft sprockets and the crankshaft sprocket with the timing marks on the front case. Wrap the timing belt around the sprockets so there is no slack in the upper span of the belt and the timing marks are still aligned.
  2. Install the tensioner pulley and move the pulley by hand so the long side of the belt deflects about 1/4in.
  3. Hold the pulley tightly so the pulley cannot rotate when the bolt is tigthened. Tighten the bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and recheck the deflection amount.
  4. Install the timing belt tensioner fully toward the water pump and tighten the bolts. Place the upper end of the spring against the water pump body.
  5. Align the timing marks of the camshaft, crankshaft and oil pump sprockets with their corresponding marks on the front case or rear cover.
There is a possibility to align all timing marks and have the oil pump sprocket and silent shaft out of time, causing an engine vibration during operation. If the following step is not followed exactly, there is a 50 percent chance that the silent shaft alignment will be 180 degrees off.
  1. Before installing the timing belt, ensure that the left side (rear) silent shaft (oil pump sprocket) is in the correct position as follows:
    1. Remove the plug from the rear side of the block and insert a tool with shaft diameter of 0.31 in. (8mm) into the hole.
    2. With the timing marks still aligned, the shaft of the tool must be able to go in at least 2 1/2 in. If the tool can only go in about 1 in., the shaft is not in the correct orientation and will cause a vibration during engine operation. Remove the tool from the hole and turn the oil pump sprocket 1 complete revolution. Realign the timing marks and insert the tool. The shaft of the tool must go in at least 2 1/3 in.
    3. Recheck and realign the timing mark.
    4. Leave the tool in place to hold the silent shaft while continuing.
  2. Install the belt to the crankshaft sprocket, oil pump sprocket, then camshaft sprocket, in that order. While doing so, make sure there is no slack between the sprocket except where the tensioner is installed.
  3. Recheck the timing marks' alignment. If all are aligned, loosen the tensioner mounting bolt and allow the tensioner to apply tension to the belt.
  4. Remove the tool that is holding the silent shaft and rotate the crankshaft a distance equal to 2 teeth on the camshaft sprocket. This will allow the tensioner to automatically apply the proper tension on the belt. Do not manually overtigthen the belt or it will howl.
  5. Tigthen the lower mounting bolt first, then the upper spacer bolt.
  6. To verify correct belt tension, check that the deflection at the longest span of the belt is about 1/2in.
  7. Install the timing belt covers and all related items.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
