If you jump the car it runs till you stop at a light then it dies and has to be jumped again. Is there a fuse or relay the alternator goes through
No fusible links on your car. There is a fuse on the side of the fuse panel under the hood that can blow. 175 amp, has a small cover to lift up. When it blows, the car will run, but the alternator will not charge the battery.
Your alternator has a fusible link coming from the battery to the alternator, fuse probably is blown. The link is in a box next to the battery.
SOURCE: How do you check if altenator is charging battery,
Most vehicles if you get the car running and unhook the positive battery cable it will stay running that is because it is running off the alternator. if it dies like your talking about I would most definitely say your alternator needs to be replaced. Most likely when you jumped your father in laws pick up there was a bad ground somewhere and your alternator got a surge of electricity and it fried it. Hope this helps.

Check the harness for a break at the splice about one foot back of the alternator,it's a common area of failure. If thats not it then check the fusible link that comes from the starter relay and goes to the alternator.

That's not unusual with electrical parts. They can fail with no symptoms. And your symptoms say it is indeed a bad alternator.
