Few questions: I going to attempt to change the oil pan gasket on my dodge van. When I purchased the gasket I asked the counter parts person if I needed any type of additional sealant. He sold me basically an RTV silicone. However, upon reading the gasket's instructions it calls for no sealant? I also noted that it came with an O-ring...where does it go?
Last the oil pan has two bolts that is between the transmission and oil pan cover; its a s tyro foam type of gasket or seal??? Removing this foam or pealing it off will it cause any difficulties? And do have to purchase a new gasket/seal? What is its purpose? Or will I cause damage to the transmission if I remove it? Your advise is greatly appreciated.
TO answer all your questions, the red oring is for the oil pump pickup tube, one bolt will fix that, RTV sealet is used in the seperation seams at the timing cover and rear seal retainer, 1/6th thick bead, 1/4" wide at seams, has for the trans inspection cover remove it for the repair, 5 bolts will do that part, and rear bracket, then the pan is ready to come off... GOOD LUCK RDJRP

Thanks for your quick response. Let me attempt to describe the foam seal. Its black about as long as the oil pan, maybe 3/8" thick. Its between the transmission and oil pan gasket. It appears to be pinched/inserted between both units. On the transmission side where this foam meets appears to have a cover (vertically mounted) with two or three bolts. oil pan is horizontal...as you look at them from under neath. The only way that I know on how to take the two oil pan bolts that are close to this foam is to rip the foam apart to get a good grip on the bolts...
If the gasket instructions read no sealant, I would follow that guidance. Could the O-ring be for the oil pan drain plug? Could you clarify the stryofoam seal situation -- is there a small cover between the oil pan and transmission and the styrofoam seal is under that small cover?
