Most older cars had 2 adjustments , a air screw for enrichment and throttle screw for engine idle speed, later models did away with the enrichment screw, to adjust set idle screw to 600 rpm, adjust air mixture screw to fastest rpm , reset idle screw to preferred idle speed.

Golfcart cranks but not starting.

Before doing anything, make sure that the timing and valves are properly adjusted. THEN, you need to check the ignition system and the fuel delivery systems for proper operation. You need spark and fuel delivery for that puppy to run. Did you check the ignition coil to make sure it is good? Are you getting a strong spark at the plug? Did you try starter fluid? Is new carb properly adjusted?

How to test a ignition coil

you need a meter and test the coil 20 to 40 min after it has had power in it. but if its ruff idling and lacking power it could be the timing is out. or a bad plug lead or spark plugs. you not said what car it is. get your self a timing light. mark the timing marks on engine with white paint and plug the timing light into spark plug one and run engine the light should light up on the timing mark on the big end pulley. if not adjust the distributor till it lines up and then lock it off. also points in the distributor may need adjusting or replacing if there is not much left. and the cap as well you will prob find it is the points need changing.

Carburetor settings

In general there are fewer ways to adjust the newer carbs than the vintage carbs of the past. Often the vacuum at low idle is the problem and you should check a vacuum port on the intake with a Vacuum gauge.

Sometimes an EGR valve does not shut completely and the engine struggles at idle. If you find that vacuum is adequate, you can adjust the air mixture screws to provide the highest vacuum reading and then crank them in until the vacuum falls less than 1 inch.

It might be beneficial to run the engine and spray a water mist from a hand powered spray bottle around the seams of the intake and carburetor. Also spray any vacuum solenoids or lines. You will notice a change in RPM if there is a leak.

You may have a fuelpump problem A clogged fuel filter or low pressure can affect how the car idles.

Please rate my info.

Engine (Quad-4) turns over, starts momentarily, then quits; this will happen over and over, but it will not continue to run???

Check if all of the plugs are getting spark. You can do that by pulling the high tension wire at the spark plug end and over the engine check if all are getting the blue arc. Check if the fuel filter needs changing. The fuel supply may also not be consistent, check during start up if fuel is being supplied to the lines via the filter or the hose to the engine also after the engine dies. Fuel may just be only at the start up and when idling supply is low or gone.
I am unsure if your year has the fuel pump already, it may be the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump has gone bad.
Try cleaning the intake with carb cleaners just to rule out dirt in the sensors and the manifold. Check for leaks in the vacuum hoses and air duct from the filter to the intake. It may also be the IAC valve or the EGR for the EFI variants, IAC especially if the idling after start up and before dying is rough. It may need cleaning or replacing.
If you still have the carb or it was converted to carb you may need to adjust the fuel and air by moving screws by quarter turns on the carb and taking note of the movements. It could also be the jets for the fuel which may need cleaning. Carb cleaner would do the job but for tough dirt you may have to remove the carb and clean the internals. During cleaning you may inspect the valves and the parts for wear.

I have a 1988 jeep, was running pretty good gave it an oil change and changed the spark plug now its idling high as hell and it sounds like ****.. any ideas

DID YOU REMOVE ANY VACUUM LINES OR ANY THING NEAR THE THROTTLE LINKAGE AREA.OR DID YOU REMOVE ACCELERATOR LINKAGE MISROUTE IT CAUSE BINDING OR PULLING ON CABLE THIS WILL MAKE VECHICLE IDLE HIGH.

2002 nissan 2753cc 6cyl firing order.

Carb.basic setting.
On the Carb to Intake manifold there is an AIR/FUEL volume control screw. Gently screw it in Clockwise until it bottoms out, then back it out 2 turns.
Next, find the Throttle Butterfly Fast/ Slow idling screw, and back it out until the Throttle linkage is released.
Then slowly wind it back in 2 turns
If you have SPARK and FUEL up, then it should Fire Up.
When it does, using the Air/Fuel screw to stabilise the idle mixture, adjust the Idling Speed Screw to run balanced at around 750 RPM.
Happiness!!!
All the best and Regards, DT
