Is this an automatic or manual transmission? When was the last time you changed the filter if it's an automatic? You may have a valve body problem too.

Testimonial: "automatic.filter never changed. But fluid clear."

The fluid can be clear and the filter restricting flow. The pressure regulator in the transmission could be giving you a problem too. Pressure test the transmission.

My 1997 Chevy Cavalier automatic transmission is stuck in neutral and the shifter just glides from park, won't engage in any gears.

If the shift handle moves extremely freely (more than normal), changes are that the shift cable has become disconnected from the shift lever. This would explain the indicator not moving out of neutral.
You will need to access the shift lever by removing the console cover. Once you access the shifter check the cable connection to the level. If the cable is broken, it will need replacement. If the cable clip has broken or fallen off, it will need to be reattached.

I assume it is an auto by what you say. Is the O/D light blinking any codes? It is common in that model for the shift solenoids to fail, one or both, and the transmission then cannot find low gears forward.

Get a readout of trouble codes from a mobile come-to-you mechanic, or your own OBD reader, to see if that is it.

1985 toyota motor home. 4 cyl. 22re engine. goes slowly into reverse when transmission is cold, but when it warms up, it wont go into reverse. If I give it more gas, it will sometimes catch briefly, but...

Change the fluid and filter. If i remember correctly reverse and third gear share the same band and clutch pack. Some transmissions you could tighten the band on it.

Car struggles to get into first gear after it has warmed up.

You probably have a problem with your CV joints. There is a device that helps in the shifting of gears that needs looking at. I assume it shifts to the other gears when it is warm ? How many miles do you have and are most of the miles on the highway? I hope this isn't leading to a transmission breakdown. Have you had the transmission serviced regularly and filter changed?
