It really depends on the car. A rear wheel drive car vs a front wheel drive car. An all wheel drive car vs a 4 wheel drive car.(There can be a difference) But lets be general. A basic rear wheel drive might cost $800. while a front wheal drive car might be a $1200- $1500 charge. Of course anything over 10 years old and anything exotic will be more.

Not starting

the ring gear on the fly wheel may have damaged teeth or not have the right gear teeth count to be compatible . Pinion teeth have to match the ring gear teeth or they have trouble meshing and that makes it hard to turn over. If the ring gear teeth have been damaged then the gear box will have to come out to get the fly wheel / flex plate off. If it is auto then it is a simple matter of replacing the flex plate . But if manual the ring gear is removed from the flywheel and a new one fitted. Most accredited service shops can do this operation. count the number of teeth on the ring gear and the number on the starter pinion and take the figures to an auto electrician and he will know it they are right.

Flywheel or something grings against the starter when clutch is engaged

There is no way the ring gear will hit the starter pinion unless the fly wheel bolts on the crank shaft or loose allowing the flywheel to run out of true. If you have had clutch/ rear seal work done lately the fly wheel will only fit in one position and if that was ignored at some time then the fly wheel will run out and touch the starter pinion.. I would also check the adjustment on the starter pinion as it has to be set by the lever pivot to a correct distance or it will touch the teeth of the ring gear

I have replaced the starter 3 times and most of the time it sounds like the bendix isn't hitting the flywheel ring gear

You need to make sure that the starter is positioned right first, sometimes they need to be shimmed to change the position. In some cases though this can mean a warped a fly wheel. Make sure none of the teeth the fly wheel are missing. I had one missing once and anytime it hit that spot i had to move it which isnt easy on an automatic.

are you sure you got a good solenoid?souds like it's not kicking the starter bendix out for the start.if it hums that means it's turning right? it has to be the solenoid not kicking the starter bendix into the flywheel to start the engine.i would try another solenoid. thank you for choosing fixya.com

FORD truck 1985, with a 460 Engine and a 4-speed F600 transmission. The mechanic changed the fly wheel, clutch and presure plate. The starter is not engaing, it doesn't go all the way in.

Look at the location of the ring gear on the old flywheel and the new flywheel. Soemtimes the gear to installed too far on to the flywheel.

Check that the starter is fully seated, I presume the same starter was used.....If not, compare new and old starter, side by side.

When i start my car the starter be grinding do that mean the staeter is bad?

it can do the pinion may be worn, take off the motor and see! do it now beause it might be the ring gear, you see if you ahve a bad pinion then it will dammage the fing gear! if the ring gear is dammaged... you can replace starter,, It may seem fine, but the dammaged ring will grind up the new starter's pinnion, once the ring gear is dammaged then it is gear box out! so look now to avoid more lenghty and expensive repairs!! Have a nice DAy........Bruce.

My kia is not starting i got new battery, new fuel pump, new coils also wires and spark plugs, but still dont work. I also check the starter and starter still works what could it be... the starter, it...

Yes it could be wear on the ring gear.To check move the car slightly when in gear and try starting again. or remove the starter and check if any teeth are missing on the ring gear. (the ring gear is a large cog wheel around the outside of the fly wheel). It is still most likely to be the starter. Although it seems ok the sylanoid may be to weak to throw the cog wheel into the ring gear
