You can't do this at home, the car must be programmed by a dealer or a locksmith who has the correct scanner and programming tool.

SOURCE: ignition switch locks up and cannot be driven

I have a 2006 Sonata. The ignition lock will not turn. I used all the keys and nothing happened. The wheel is straight. I have had 3-4 people turn the wheel of the vehicle. I called the dealership and they gave me a hard time. The tow truck came to my house before, the dealership said there is no problem. If I am going to find out the problem it would cost me $2,000 to find the problem. This is so awful. I talked to a cousin who's an engineer. He took a look at it and said this is a thief-prevention mechanism designed by Hyundai; however, when this things get old--it works against the owner. The worst is...it's not on the driving manual. No preventive information about this. I've also been stuck numerous time elsewhere just because the ignition lock would not turn. I am getting very tired of this vehicle.

Please help.

SOURCE: The key wont turn in the ignition of my hyundai

hi from uk please try this ? with key removed try gently turning steerwheel to the right if you feel a slight spring in steering ? hold on the spring and insert key it should work and release lockand turn ign on ? if steering is springing on left ? try as above the same method not unusual for steer lock to prevent turning key as the steering even in straight position ? the necessity to gently release load on lock is req'd to allow key to turn/unlock the steering lock from the steering column practice doing the above each time you fit key to unlock steering and tuning ign on to start hope this helps

SOURCE: Unlocking the steering wheel

You'll need to have it diagnosed. Without actually looking at it myself, there are numerous possible causes and to take you through each one would take days.

2014 frontier stering and ignition locked tried wiggkling wheel while turning key nothing

If your 2014 Frontier's steering and ignition are locked and wiggling the wheel while turning the key does not unlock it, there are a few possible causes and solutions you can try:
  1. Dead battery: If the battery is dead or low on power, it can cause the steering wheel lock to engage and prevent the key from turning. Try jump-starting the vehicle or replacing the battery to see if that resolves the issue.
  2. Faulty ignition switch: The ignition switch may be faulty and not responding to the key, preventing it from turning. You may need to replace the ignition switch to resolve the issue.
  3. Damaged steering column: The steering column may be damaged or worn, preventing the steering lock from disengaging. In this case, you may need to replace the steering column or have it repaired by a qualified mechanic.
  4. Malfunctioning lock cylinder: The lock cylinder itself may be malfunctioning or damaged, preventing the key from turning. You may need to replace the lock cylinder to resolve the issue.

New Ignition Barrel. Same prob. Key will not turn to off position

It sounds like you need to replace the (electric)ignition switch. When they go bad you will usually hear a crunch sound, they can be so bad as to overheat and cause other issues.

There's probably nothing wrong with the OEM key/barrel.

Disengage steering lock when the tumblers in the lock seem to have collapsed

Dear Lynette,

You have not told us the year, make, model, or mileage, but here is a long shot for you.

Most vehicles for the last 30 years have a steering wheel lock installed to prevent, or slow down, theft.

Unfortunately, if you get the front wheels in a bind, such as parking against a curb, the steering wheel can lock up and prevent your turning the wheel and starting the car.

The difficulty is to do 3 things at once.

Pull the steering wheel right and left, while at the same time you try to insert the key in the ignition and turn the key.

You must not pull too hard the steering wheel, nor pull not-hard-enough.

You are wanting to release the pressure on the key lock.

I hope this works for you.

God bless your efforts.

I replaced the steering column on 07 pontiac g5 now the anti theft is on and i don't have my remote cuz i lost the keys and used column only has the key what do i do

The reason your anti-theft is active is the new column has a different key than your original. The chip that is in the key is different than the one that is suppose to go to your vehicle. You need to order a new lock cylinder from your local GM dealer for your VIN number.

Will not start

The Passive Anti-Thft System (PATS) in your vehicle prevents the vehicle from being started with the wrong key. Even if the key is mechanically able to turn the ignition lock cylinder, the digital signal from the key must be programmed so the PATS will accept the signal from the new key.
You have a couple of choices. You can change the lock cylinder out with the lock cylinder from the original steering column so the original keys can be used. You can remove the lock cylinder from the new column and have a locksmith re-key the lock cylinder to accept the original keys, then reinstall it into the new steering column. Or you can take the entire vehicle to a professional auto service facility that has the computer equipment necessary to reprogram your computer to accept the new keys.

2008 Colbalt - steering wheel is locked - tried wiggling the wheel back and forth - can't move anything - won't budge what do I do? Can CAA unlock it or does it need to be towed to a dealer?

You may have to pull your steering wheel prety hard one way or the other if the wheels are in a bind. If this doesn't work, key cylinder problems are common on most GM cars. You may have to replace your key lock cylinder. Please note that the key lock cylinder contains the sensor for the PassKey Security System. If the lock cylinder is replaced, the computer has to be reprogrammed to accept the signal coming from the new PassKey Sensor. The engine will not start if this is not done properly.
