Turned on our 1996 crown vice 4.6l and starter keep running stayed engaged while engine running and would not disengage after turning car off,starter keep spinning and trying to start engine
Starter would not disenege after engine turned then turned engine off and starter stayed engaged and engine keep turning like trying to crank over key was off then finally stopped now no start no noise but electrical works just faint click behind fuse box at steering collum driver corner panel

check for a faulty starter relay
pull the starter and check for burred teeth on the ring gear
have an auto electrician check the solenoid for burnt points sticking together
also check the over run clutch operation on the pinion as if it is not operational the ring gear will keep the pinion engaged
solenoid may be sticking. Have someone start the car, if it sticks tap the solenoid with screw driver handle. If that stops the starter, replace the solenoid. If it were me, I wouldn't bother testing it and just replace solenoid.
Seems to be a problem with the solenoid on the starter. After the engine starts, and you let the key go to the "run" position, the solenoid is supposed to disengage. If it stays engaged, it keeps the battery to starter contacts engaged. You have to remove the starter to get to the solenoid -- usually it is best to replace both the starter and the solenoid as a unit.
Inside the starter is a bendix drive. This is what engages the flywheel. There is a return spring that disengages the bendix when the soleniod power is cut. I know you said you had new starters put in , but there still remains a problem with the starter. You can replace just the bendix drive. If you are going to take it to a shop the labor to just remove the starter and replace the bendix will probably cost you as much as a starter. If you replace the starter make sure you use a reputable company that remanfactures the part. There are good one and bad ones out there. You get what you pay for.
engine crank thrusts worn and crank moved back enough to not engage ,with a manual the clutch would push it forewards.or the flex plate on the back of the torque converter damaged and broke in teh centre where bolts to the crank
