The ambient temp sensor is usually located somewhere in front of the radiator or behind the front bumper. You'll see a small device, clipped to a nearby metal part of the body with wires attached.

Before replacing the sensor, try improving a possible poor connection by disconnecting and reconnecting the sensor a few times. I've experienced this on my '98 Astro, and the temp displayed correctly after cleaning up the connection.

Happy Motoring!

Air conditioner comes on briefly then stops. The temperature gage on the panel which shows outside temperature is inaccurate sometimes giving a display of -27 degrees.

Well the outside temperature gauge is generally not wired into the a/c. The internal temperature is more important but is not displayed as such. The 'internal' temperature sensor is used to regulate the a/c blending door and blower speed.

When did the cooling problem start?

THE EXTERIOR TEMPERATURE GAGE IS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY IT READS 140 DEGREES WHEN IT IS 35 DEGREES OUTSIDE

You will need to replace the outside air temperature sensor these go out quite regularly. The sensor is located behind the grille, and is connected to a 2 wire plug. The easiest way to locate it is to buy the new sensor and then look behind the grille for the old one. You might have to get to it from underneath. It just clips in place.
