could be shifter loose or broken.the shift cable could be worn or not in place the c lock retainer could have broken where shift cable barely in place.

Check large motor mount on pass. side of engine compartment. If it has cracks in the heavy rubber isolator bushing inside the motor mount, that is very likely your problem.

I would keep the THM 350 in it for the Powerglide trans is far worth more than the 72 Nova you have. These transmissions are getting so rare and gear heads are paying big bucks for them now
If you do plan to install this one in your Nova make sure the splines are exactly the came so the driveshaft fits. If not a different spline will be needed for your drive shaft
