The cruise control will turn on but when i press set to hold speed, the set light comes on for a second and immediately turns off and the vehicle will not hold speed. whats wrong? I changed the stop light switch which also functions as the cruise control disconnect and that fixed it, thanks to all for the help.

Actually a really simple thing. Too elaborate on what the first response put, simply click that "Cruise" button so the light is on. Next, when you're at the speed you want to mantain, click the button on the end of the windshield wiper switch. If you want to drop your speed after that, simply hold down on that same button. If you want to raise the maintained speed, simply slide in the button facing you on the windshield wiper switch. If you want to turn OFF cruise control you can do it one of two ways, either press the "cruise" button again, or simply tap the brakes. If you want to accelerate briefly but maintain that cruise control speed, simply use your accelerater pedal.

make sure the cruise control cable to the throttle isn't too loose, if it is ok, check your brake switch. if it is sending the signal the brake is on it will not allow cruise to work and will do same thing as described about the set light.

I had same problem (cruise control/dashboard lights) for the past month with my 2000 Elantra. Replace the tail lights bulbs - my problem was caused by a problem with the double filament within the bulb. Essententially, there was a short when I turned on the lights or hit the brakes.
I did this last night and everything is working properly now.

ok under the hood on your throttle body there is 2 sets of cables attaching to it the one closest to the throttle body connects to you gas pedal and the one next to that connects to your cruise chances are that it popped off or the cable broke chase the cable back to the control box if there is no breakage then you main cont box went out and should be replaced to locate you throttle body follow the tube from your air cleaner that tube connects the throttle body the cables are right next to that
