SOURCE: where is the location for the transmission fluid

In the transmission pan underneath tranny. You should have a red dipstick on passenger side to check. Not all models have a dipstick, some you have to go under car, find the upper filler bolt on tranny, remove the bolt, stick your finger in there to check tranny fluid levels and add from there. You can go to autozone.com and register for full free online repair manual for your car.

SOURCE: I dont know where to

You do not say whether it is an automatic or standard ,and also is it a 4 or 6 cylinder????. If it is a 6 cylinder with autpmatic there is no dipstick, only a RED cap on the drivers side of the engine. It is a little hard to see but if you look straight down under where the air tube is that comes from the air box it is there. It is a little tricky to get to but it just unscrews and the fluid shoud be to the top. Get a flashlight and check. Normally these will not loose fluid unless there is a leak. You will need a funnel with a long hose to put fluid in,and make sure the fluid is for a GM ONLY.

2002 Oldsmobile Alero makes loud noises when turning

more than likely it is just low on power steering fluid. system might have air in it now. so after fill power steering unit to proper level driver the car and check fluid level again. and add more if needed . I believe car should have motor running for when checking fluid, same as transmission.

Where is the Thermostat

Follow the Hose attached to the top or side of the front radiator down to where it joins the block. this should be a hollowed piece of metal about the size of a baseball, remover the two 1/2 inch bolts holding it, (after of course draining the fluids out!!) check it for operational proficiency if not replace it...(use a pan of water after it closes) then heat the water in the pan until it opens checking it with a thermometer (cooking type)

Is there a certain type of transmission fluid that I should use for my 2001 Olds Alero?

yes you use DEXRON VI or any other brand fluid meeting the same GM STANDARDS as DEXRON VI, Pennsoil makes a less expensive ATF that fills the bill.
