Dodge neon 2.0 L sohc how to remove lifters from rocker arms

If you removed the rocker arms then the exhaust valves will all be closed and so will miss the pistons. How ever if the inlet valves were not working and the rocker arms were still in place then there may be damage to inlet valves.

Interesting question. If you think a lifter arm, which I presume is also called a rocker arm, is broken, remove the valve cover and find it. All the rocker arms are visible, and should be easy to see.

simply the rockers are on a shaft as a assy. you set them down in place over the valve and the lifter put the retainers and bolts in then step torque them down from the center bolts out do it in a few steps to make sure they are seated properly then torque to spec.

There is no valve adjustment on that engine. Your rocker arms are on a single shaft that us bolted to the head. The lifters are hydraulic and will take up any normal slack unless there is damage to the cam, lifter, push rod or rocker.

not a valve, but a lifter. I will paste procedure below. You judge if you can do it or not. Recommend you replace them all while you're in there. If you let this go, the lifter will wear out the camshaft. Lifters are $22 each, and you have 8 of them. You will also need a new valve cover gasket.

1. Disconnect the engine air cleaner-to-valve cover hose from the cover by compressing the hose clamp with pliers and sliding the clamp back, then separate the hose from the cover.
2. Remove the spark plug wire separators from the valve cover and set the wire assemblies aside.
3. Unfasten the three valve cover retaining bolts.
4. Remove the valve cover and gasket from the cylinder head.
   

WARNING Do not use any abrasive grinding discs to remove gasket material. Use a plastic manual gasket scraper to remove the gasket residue. Be careful not to scratch or gouge the aluminum sealing surfaces when cleaning them.

1. Remove the old gasket material from the cylinder head and valve cover mating surfaces.

If removing more than one valve lifter (tappet), mark the lifters and their locations as they must be installed in their original bores.

1. Remove the rocker arm(s).
2. Unfasten the lifter guide plate retainer.
3. Remove the guide plate and the lifter.

To install:

1. The oil feed hole in the lifter must face away from the oil feed hole in the cylinder head.
2. Lubricate the lifter(s) with clean 5W-30 engine oil and install them in their original bores.

Make sure the lifter guide plate retainer tabs are towards the rear of the cylinder head, and the lifter guide plate tabs are towards the front of the cylinder head.

1. Install the lifter guide plate and tighten the retainer.
2. Install the rocker arms.
   

Do not use any sealer with a silicone type gasket.

1. Install a new gasket and the valve cover.
2. Install and tighten the valve cover retainers to 71-97 inch lbs. (8-11.5 Nm).
3. Attach the spark plug wire separators to the cylinder head.
4. Connect the engine air cleaner-to-valve cover hose and engage the hose clamp

Soory but theres no adusting the rocker arms, you would need to remove the cover and check for worn cam or rocker and replace the worn ones, this engine doesnt use lifters the rockerarms run right off the cam, hope this is helpful.

SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE STICKY LASH ADJUSTER(LIFTER)..MANY MILES ON IT?HAVE YOU BEEN GOOD TO CHANGE OIL AND FILTER?TRY CHANGING THE OIL AND FILTER AND ADDING AN OIL SUPPLEMENT ..IF THIS DOESN'T WORK,YOU WILL HAVE TO ISOLATE WHICH BANK OF ENGINE NOISE IS COMING FROM,REMOVE VALVE COVER AND YOU CAN TO SEE WHICH ONE(S) ARE MAKING NOISE..PUSH DOWN ON EACH ROCKER ARM..A BAD ONE WILL BE SOFT..A GOOD ONE WILL BE HARD..NO LASH..TO REPLACE..YOU REMOVE ROCKER SHAFT BOLTS AND ROCKER SHAFTS..YOU CAN PURCHASE ONLY THE ONE(S) YOU NEED..BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU REMOVE ROCKER SHAFTS..THE LIFTERS CAN FALL OUT..GET A STICKY GREASE TO HOLD THEM IN ROCKER ARMS DURING REASSEMBLY..I HOPE THIS HELPS

Did the timing belt break at one time? Aside from the obvious of it sounding like your son did what mine did and tried to race the vehicle beyond it's abilities if the timing belt broken at one time it may have damaged the valves. If the valve impacts the cyclinder it is possible that it can damage the rocker and cam. When you pull the head off this time have the head re-worked and valves replaced. This should solve the problem.
