You could rebuild it. stop the burning oil( this is a fail). Or dump it and upgrade your vehicle. Another option is to move to a place that doesn't have emissions testing.

SOURCE: Torque specs for mighty max

Per my Chilton's manual tehe bolts should be (cold engine) 65 to 72 FT. Pnds., the cam shaft bearing bolts should be 8x25 = 15 - 19 Ft pnds and the 8x65 should be 14 - 15 Ft Pnds.

The sequence is as follows for the (10 ) head bolts:

7 - 5 - 2 - 4 - 10

9 - 3 - 1 - 6 - 8

I hope this may help,
Tom

SOURCE: failed smog check

How well does the vehicle run?

Assuming that the engine did pass the EGR function test on the emission test results, and the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) or check engine light is not on when the engine is running, and if you are not sure when the last time it was that the engine had a complete tune-up, with distributor cap, ignition rotor, spark plugs, spark plug wires, air and fuel filters, then a complete tune-up would certainly help, and if the engine oil and oil filter have not been changed in a while, then they should also be changed before an emission test because long used engine oil traps carbon and it will show up as higher CO on the emission test because the emission analyzer will be able detect the higher CO from the engine oil through the PCV valve.

However, it would seem from those HC readings that there is a vacuum leak, and carefully inspect all of the vacuum lines for any cracks or damage, (especially the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator) because cracks in the vacuum lines seem to like to hide underneath the lines.

The emission label under the hood should have the vacuum line routing diagram printed on it, and the vacuum lines should all be checked to be certain that they are all connected correctly.

Here is the firing order diagram for that vehicle to help assist you tune-up the vehicle.

91 Mitsubishi mighty max smoking an water comes out tail pipe why

If its white smoke, then you have a cracked head gasket. Check your radiator for loss of coolant and engine oil, pull the oil dipstick and see if the oil is whitish and if all the above check out you do have a cracked head.

What where the Emission Gas readings?
What is the standard to pass at your location?

You can Google exhaust gases & study what causes
the gases that were to HI & cause the vehicle to fail

Could be any number of things from a dirty air filter, dirty oil,
neglected ignition system, old failed exhaust converter, etc

You ALWAYS work on ALL Vehicles for a few days BEFORE
you go to inspection, then again, if they fail, using the exhaust
gases as your guide to resolving the area or system with the problem

My 1988 Mighty Max is smoking from the exhaust. ..

Does the smoke go away soon after starting? If so then your valve stem seals are worn out. If it smokes all the time then the piston rings are worn. Oil fouled spark plugs will cause starting problems.

Where is the egr valve located on a 1990 mitsubishi 3.0L?

Notice in the emissions part of the service manual. That is has different versions of this truck Canada, 49 state and a 50 state. Not all of them have the egr valve. Some may not have this and in some areas this could cause the truck to fail "NO/PPM" (NOX) on the smog like in LA County. Causing the truck to be viewed as a gross polluter. This reading might be more then double the gross polluter limit allowed.

If it is doing this only when you rev the engine after it has been idling a while, it is probably smoke from burning oil. A new set of valve stem seals will probably work wonders in reducing the smoke. Stopping the oil consumption will not only help it to pass a smog test but will also help to keep from damaging your engine and your catalytic converters. 110,000 miles is just barely broke-in for a Mitsubishi engine. However, the seals are probably cracked and broken due to the AGE of the vehicle.
