With MBZ transmissions, you really need the trouble codes before you replace anything ; I would have the fluid and filter checked and replaced first. Without seeing your car, if a basic service does not solve the problem -- problem could be attributed to a number of parts; including but not limited to the conductor plate / shifter (best case scenario) to a wide range of failing internal transmission parts

Does the car have a transmission dipstick? Look on the passenger side of the engine compartment towards the firewall to find the dipstick tube. If it has a dipstick there will be a square top on it with a locking mechanism. Run car to normal operating temerature, unlock the dipstick pull it out wipe it off push it back in and pull it back out then look to see if the fluid is between the marks. If not just add fluid through the tube. If you don't have a dipstick there will be a smaller cap with red plastic lock on it. You will have to break the red lock to get the cap off. There is a special tool from Mercedes to check the level on these non dipstick units. If you think it is low then add 1 quart and road test for proper operation and shifting.

The crankshaft position sensors tend to fail. Symptoms of this are: The engine will crank—but not start—especially when the engine is warm. The car may start again if it is left to cool off, but it may run roughly or have poor performance. Communicating these specific symptoms to your technician can save diagnostic time.

There should be a red lever under the steering wheel, VERY close to the firewall. Sometimes it is hard to see because they tend to put it up into the dash a little.
Testimonial: "thank you soooo much!!! It was exactly there"
If the ABS warning is on then the systems control module has sensed a fault in the ABS system and has turned off the ABS, you now have just regular non ABS brakes. The removal of the negative cable may or may not be the cause, the ABS module must now be tested for fault codes, this is done with a special scanner, any good brake shop or tire shop can perform this test..
SOURCE: I need the radio code for my 2000 Mercedes E430
Fixya doesn't have access to the factory computer data base that contains your unique radio security code. To get the code you must contact the MB dealer service dept. There is a site on the net that claims to supply radio codes, it is called radio-code.com, I have never used their service so have no idea if they can help you with this, it is a $10 charge for the info I think.
