Hi Russell, Im AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair.
Russell, you cannot start a security installed vehicle with a none security key. If you have lost your key to the vehicle then here's what you can do. Take the last 8 of your VIN Number and your vehicle to the Mitsubishi Dealer and they can cut and program a new key to the security module. NOTE: Another way to do this is to have the dealer cut a new key for the vehicle and then call around to find a lock smith that has the ability to program the key to the vehicle. NOTE: I would check to see which way is cheaper. To Tow the vehicle OR have a lock smith come to you. Hope this helps and please visit my auto-repair-website here: http://www.bigasautorepair.com/
Some of these keys can be made at the dealer with just the vans id #, you can call the dealer service dept and see if they will cut a new key. then some of these need reprograming, the dealer or an auto lock smith can cut a key and program it.
You can call a lock smith and they can come out and fix it, if you have towing service then call tow company so they can take the car to a lock smith to save the charge of the lock smith, they now have the ability to make keys for the ping style locks that came out in 2000 or earlier and having the key that mates to the lock will make it cheaper but the will have to program the new key with your computer.
Does the Key have fob if so you need to take the fob out of the spare key and insert it into the original Key to get it to work. or take it to a lock smith and they can do it for you around $10.00.
the ignition keys are not coded. no "chip" in them you should be able to just have a spare key cut and it will work fine. These use an electronic device in key cylinder that senses the proper rotation of cylinder and tumblers. so if someone tries to pry on with a screwdriver it will disable starter. when this is replaced it has to be reprogrammed
