Broken or loose gear mechanism between stick and gearbox.
Or broken gearbox change mechanism. Obviously the former is cheaper to repair...

2003 xtype will not turn on,switch problem it looks like ,i removed etc to clean and now its hard to get the switch to even wants to start whats my problem someone please

has the battery been disconnected? If so, I have heard of this problem. The on board computer speaks to the car constantly and after 10 days of non charging the battery is flat! The only solution is a visit to your nearest Jag garage to get it all re-programmed, this solution would also include Battery disconnection. Check with a Jag garage first, it's free to ask, but this sounds like your problem. A major design flaw if you ask me.

2003 X-Type: i want to buy a 2003 jaguar xtype with only 41,000...

I purchased very similar here in the UK £4800 (trade) two years ago, only problem so far has been O2 sensor failure which I replaced myself but was still fairly expensive. Other than that car has been good. Check for Jag service history

Bushes missing from gear stick and transfer stick

If it's a later model (post 98), then I have an idea what's happened. On the rounded ball end of the gear stick that goes in the box, there is meant to be a plastic bush that is only a very loose fit on the end of the stick. If it has dropped while either removing or replacing the gearstick, and fallen into the area at the back of where the gearstick actuates the shift rail, then apart from having a very sloppy gearstick, you won't be able to move the shift rail backwards - which is what happens when you move the gearstick forward (1st,3rd,5th). This should be fixable from in the cab. Of course, if you have an earlier model, none of the above applies, as you have the gearstick moving only one of a choice of three shift rails with no bush in that area. The only thing that happens to those is the spring on the gearstick breaks (that can't be replaced on its own!)
