Service power steering alert/dts code c0450 on 08 CTS. Please continue to read-it gets interesting!

Replaced steering gear/rack and pinion, replaced both outer tie rods, left front wheel bearing/hub assembly that dealer said was bad, replaced the ABS wheel speed sensor, p/s pump and pressure hose still no power steering, however the alert goes away when I take the bearing/hub assemble out of car, comes back when it is re-inserted. Specifically the codes being thrown are c0450-02 steering assist control actuator circuit-short to ground and c0450-0B- steering assist control actuator circuit high current.

If it works with out the bearing sensor being plugged Leave it. You may get ABS codes/light, but you still have brakes. Just not anti lock. The steering module is bad. You have already proved it, You unplug it, It works. Plug it in, it is bad. It is shorted out in side the computer. I just did a diesel engine, Called the computer after 30 minutes. Owner of the diesel said it wasn't. Reached up and pushed a solenoid for fuel shut off. I told them all, it just proved my point, The computer is supposed to do this. They replaced the solenoid, still no start.

The husband is bound and determined to win this battle. The plan now is to use an ohm meter to make sure we are not shorting out in the engine wire harness somewhere, then checking the the EBCM before we decide what to do. I hear you when you say to just take it out but I'm fairly certain my car won't drive without a wheel bearing, lol. It's not the sensor that we remove, its when we remove the bearing/hub assembly that the code clears. Besides its a 304 hp rear wheel drive V6 and I am no granny driver so i kinda need my stabilatrak traction control!

  • Randy Ohler Jul 09, 2016

If the sensor is in the spindle, Remove it. Or just unplug it. the sensor is there. You have traction control.

With my specific Vin it has the hub and sensor separate and the one we took out looks exactly like the new one. I dont mean to be a negative nancy and shoot everything down its just I've never seen so much trouble chasing down the issue before and I've worked in an auto shop. Makes me long for an old muscle car!

  • Randy Ohler Jul 09, 2016

No doubt, 6 or 7 wires and the old car was running down the road. Now it is like 300 wires to do the same thing. Did you replace the sensor with the new hub? If not, check it, make sure it is free of metal and dirt. When you put the hub in and the light comes on, Seems it may be making contact with the sensor. the sensor is just a signal generator. Some sensors have to be removed to pull the hub. Not sure about yours. I did a Volvo and didn't know. That was a $150 mistake.

  • Randy Ohler Jul 09, 2016

You might to check the wiring harness from the ABS unit. Check for chafing, could have a bare wire or two. Also check if there are any upgrades from the computers on your vehicle.

Ended up being a bad wire between the control box and the EBCM. Replaced that wire and so far no codes. Wish we would have looked online before we replaced parts but we were hoping and relying on te ability to trust the dealer-next time we will use the internet as a second opinion! Thank you :)

You need a dealer, you have wasted enough time and money and not repaired the fault.

It was my dealer who told me that I needed a new steering gear and wheel bearing assembly. When that didn't fix the problem we chose to invest further in the pump and hose and sensor based on other forums as the car was throwing the same code the entire time. So after paying for 2 diagnostics from my dealer we lost faith in their ability to solve my problem and if I'm going to have to spend money on parts they recommend I might as well spend on them with the money I save by not paying for more diagnostics!

Sorry if 2 dealerships couldn't solve this really doubt I can over a computer terminal.

My power steering pump went out and I replaced it now its leaking somewhere else and it not the hose

Hello Jen, there are only a few places a power steering system can leak.
1, The pump itself
2. The feed hose
3. The return hose
4 The fluid reservoir
5. The reservoir hose(s)
6. The steering gear itself.
Now, its a simple job of elimination.
Do you have rack and pinion steering...there are several places a gear can leak also.
Please do some investigation. reply to me and we'll go from there.
I am considered a rack and pinion system expert.

Power steering hard

Hey Kumar,
Does the steering get easier when it gets hot? If it get easier when hot, its the rack and pinion gear. The valve body (actually a teflon composition ring(s) o-rings/valve bore housing are getting worn to the point where they are not controlling the fluid flow when its cold,, when the rack and pinion gets hot, the valve bore expands and "corrects" the clearance which in turn, controls the fluid flow. The valve body bore in the rack and pinion housing is worn where the teflon rings ride against the bore.
This is nothing that can be fixed except by replacing the entire rack and pinion gear. Drain ALL the power steering fluid from the pump also and fill with fresh new fluid.

Is it possible for power steering fluid to get into the engine and mix with the oil? I am loosing fluid and there are no visible leaks, the engine oil and filter was recently changed and now has turne

No, the power steering is entirely a separate and sealed system, wholly external to the engine. The power steering pump pushes the fluid through a high pressure hose into the rack and pinion-the steering gear mounted below and behind the engine-and holds pressure within the rack that enables power assisted steering. At the same end where the power steering fluid hose enters the gear will be a fitting for a return line back to the fluid reservoir. These two hoses are usually routed close together at least part of the way, some may even be held together with brackets. Leaks could develop at the pump, the fluid reservoir, or the two hoses to and from the rack and pinion, or the seals inside the rack and pinion may have failed. You should be able to find the leak-it will only leak to the outside-to check the rack and pinion for leaks, right where your tie rods come out of the gear and go to the wheels for steering, will be a small rubber boot encasing the tie rod and the end of the rack assembly-on both ends is a boot and a tie rod-peel back the rubber boot from the gear ass\'y, it should be dry. If a lot of fluid, the seals in the rack and pinion are gone. It will have to be replaced.
Hopefully you will find a leaking hose or fractured reservoir, but keep looking, air flow may be blowing the leaking fluid back and under the car. Good luck, hope it\'s not the rack and pinion.

Steering is stiff & difficult during turns.have used power steering fluid.2001 suzuki vitara xl7 v6 4dr

Its either the power steering pump, or the rack & pinion, (steering gear). It is only going to get worse, and maybe even dangerous, as the steering will jam and not turn. Have it inspected by someone you trust....soon! If it is the rack & pinion it may cost around $500 to have it replaced. Make sure that price includes the required front-end alignment. It will drive like new afterwards!!

My 2003 ford focus lost it's power steering, mechanic replaced the rack and pinion thing - lost steering again and now the mechanic says it is the power steering pump. The rack and pinion was replaced...

if the rack and pinion was not leaking or causing problems. then he may of made a wrong move! if the rack was fine before, and you just lost power steering. then it is most likely the power steering pump or the lines that go from rack to the pump. good-day ! if a rack goes bad, you will get a bad steering problem or just bad steering.

I went to drive my car to work this morning and lost the power steering feels like it locked up the leak of power steering fluidf is leaking from the rack and pinion not pump

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

If that's the case then the oil seals of the rack and pinion should be replaced. If the seals are worn out it tends to leak and can definitely feel a loss of power. If it still leaks even after the replacement then the rack and pinion should be replaced.

There are instances that after oil seal replacement it still leaks it's because that the rack and pinion has severe damage.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

How do i change inner tie rod , do i need a special tool.

i think steering gear has to be removed to get rubber bellows off to access tie rod.

486d579.gif Section 11-02: Steering System, Power 1997 Continental Workshop Manual
DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY Tie Rod and Bellows SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED Description Tool Number Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B
Disassembly
  1. NOTE: Drill out mounting holes in holding fixture with a 9/16 inch drill to allow the power rack and pinion steering gear assembly mounting bolts to fit.

Mount power rack and pinion steering gear assembly in Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B.
  1. Remove tie rod ends (3A130).
  1. sve~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Use care not to damage bellows. If bellows are damaged, this will allow contamination into the steering gear and cause leakage.
Remove four clamps retaining bellows to steering gear housing (3548) and front wheel spindle tie rods (3280). Discard clamps if damaged or excessively corroded.
  1. NOTE: Steering gear does not use rivets or roll pins between the inner front wheel spindle tie rod and rack.

Remove bellows along with power steering gear rack tube (3K762).
  1. Position power rack and pinion steering gear so that several steering gear teeth are exposed. Hold steering gear sector shaft (3575) with an adjustable wrench on end teeth only while loosening ball joint nuts.
Assembly
  1. Expose several steering gear teeth and hold steering gear with adjustable wrench.
  1. Tighten each front wheel spindle tie rod separately to 90-110 Nm (67-81 lb-ft).
  1. Thoroughly clean steering gear and steering gear housing bore of any foreign material. Any abrasive material is extremely harmful to high-pressure oil seals.
  1. Apply Steering Gear Grease C3AZ-19578-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESW-M1C87-A to groove in front wheel spindle tie rod where tie rod bellows clamp to front wheel spindle tie rod and uniformly to inner diameter of tie rod bellows before installation. This allows for toe-in adjustment without twisting tie rod bellows.
  1. Install tie rod bellows and power steering gear rack tube. Make sure power steering gear rack tube is positioned as shown.
