If the pistons are hitting the valves .wouldn't the spark plugs be hitting also.?

  • Anonymous Jul 03, 2016

    not for sure.! Mostly NO.
    why ask this?
on DOHC engine, do a cylinder leak down test now. do not crank it and make it worse.
if in fact it is interference engine
    none stated.

Probably not, unless you have the wrong (too long reach) plugs installed. The pistons hitting the valves is usually because the timing chain or belt has broken or jumped position.

if the piston truely hits the valve then your car definitely need overhauling! rod bearing could have worn out. get it towed to a repair center.

As rapportblog7 said the timing belt can jump even if it is newly fitted, happens rarely but it does. What do you mean to pull the code?

SOURCE: engine wont turn over . timeing belt jumped time

well ouch!!! okay is the car worth fixing ? If the belt failed and jumped time there is more damage than just #4. what happened to the plug is the piston hit a opened valve (EXHAUST) and broke it then the valve fell into cylinder while taking in intake and upon coming up on compression that piece from the valve breaking got smashed into the head causing plug damage as well as piston and head damage, i will bet that one other cylinder has a bent valve also, it just bent though not broke but still its damaged. The best solution is to search for a used engine, $ 400.00 - $700.00 dollars. and i hope you have the skills to do the work yourself to save a few more hundred. Dont buy on desperation, check it out, hopefully you can hear it run before purchase, and that it has a exhaust on it so the noisy exhaust don't hide possible other engine noises. And make sure you get at least a thirty day warranty in writing from the seller. if private seller get address, phone #,driver lic#, exact wording on what warranty covers, price paid, and refund amount if motor fails, oil pump pressure !! KNOCKS,cracked heads. do your homework, times are tuff to give $$$$$$$ for another piece of problems or junk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Polo 1.4 clp motor keeps bending Valves

If the pistons are hitting the valves the engine is either out of time or there isn't enough clearance between the valves and pistons. If the head has been milled flat due to warpage, it is very possible that the valves are now too close to the piston. You will need either a thicker head gasket or pistons with releaf cuts to make room. But since they have already made contact, your going to need new valves at minimum.

Manual 2.0L vw new beetle -crankshaft rotates 360deg and then locks; same in reverse direction. have seen all pistons moving through spark plug ports. What could be stopping the engine crank ?

sounds like the timing is way out, its stopping as its hitting the valves, hope you have not run the engine as this can do damage to valves and pistons. recommend watching this video https://youtu.be/srf6jh-IvYw

Hi its Washington the engine does not turn a complete 360 its like its the valves a hitting on the pistons that is preventing it from turning. Is they another way or a valve timing diagram I can try?

Do not know which engine these have, look up if this is an "interference" engine. Valves can strike pistons on interference engines when timing messes up.

What would cause no compression what so ever,we have replaced the head gasket.

The Kia engine has two overhead camshafts that have to be properly aligned when installing the cylinder head. If you didn't get the timing marks on the cam pulleys as well as the crankshaft pulley lined up the valves will hit the pistons the first time you crank it over. If the valves hit the pistons, they will bend and no longer seal [no compression]. For instance, if the timing belt breaks while the engine is running here is a picture of the result [also no compression]:

From the next picture you can see how close the valves are to the pistons:

Whats behind spark plugs on a 4.3 liters gmc pick up

Directly behind your sparkplugs are the pistons. If the sparkplug is damaged, it was either the wrong plug and was too long (the piston was hitting the plug), or there is foreign debris in the engine chamber!

Timing marks hyundai excell

What year, and what engine?

If it broke I wouldn't bother replacing it until I confirmed that the valves are NOT bent! Usually when the belt brakes on a Hyundai the piston will hit a valve or two and sometimes the valve will actually poke a hole in the piston.

1999 pontiac grand prix gt - while trying to crank something popped in engine. It wouldn't turn over anymore. I can turn engine backwards by hand and the starter will turn the engine over until it hits...

Either a piston pin or a conrod sheered off and the piston got stuck in there and blocks the movement of the crankshaft, or the spring (or even the shaft) of a valve failed, the valve dropped in the cylinder and the piston hits it on the way up.
Either way it's a major malfunction, it will be cheaper to get a second-hand motor from a scrapyard than to rebuild this one.
