Engine stalls occasionally even with new ignition system
My jeep wrangler engine started stalling when driving and sometimes at idle. I changed the plugs, oxygen sensor, distribuitor cap, rotor, and it was beautiful again. Two days after, the same problem and I also get a real strong smell of gas which led me to believe the problem was in the fuel mixture ratio.
I checked everything again and the plugs and oxygen sensor were covered with a powdery black substance, but I noticed there was an unattached vacuum hose on the throttle body cover, and I can not find the other end of the hose. Could that be it? If anyone can provide me with information where to get a full vacuum diagram I would greatly appreciate it. My jeep is a 1988 wrangler 2.5 L engine
I don't know. I don't have a scanner. If only I could get the vacuum diagramI don't know. I don't have a scanner. If only I could get the vacuum diagram
Thanx pippall. I found two vacuum pipes that required air hoses, so I hooked it to one of those and the evil has gone except when going up a steep road and accelerating, it starts stalling againg, but not half as bad as it did so I lower the gas until the engine stabilizes and then gradually accelerate and it works fine. Thanks again. No wonder why you're a wizz. I am really grateful.Thanx pippall. Just one more thing. The idle on my jeep is 950 RPM and when I have just returned from a 20-30 minute highway trip, the idle goes up to 1,500 RPM until the engine cools off eventhough it did not get hot at all during the trip. Do you have any idea what that could be?Just one more thing. Re: engine stalls occasionally even with new ignition...
The powdery black substance tells me that your egr valve is not working. And that is operated by the vacum sysem. The pipe has probebly come of the EGR valve.
the trotle air idle valve is sticking. Its placed on the inlet manifold.Remove it and clean with carb cleaner if that does not work replace it.Im certain thats your problem,Thanks for the feed back,Good luck.the trotle air idle valve is sticking. Its placed on the inlet manifold.Remove it and clean with carb cleaner if that does not work replace it.Im certain thats your problem,Thanks for the feed back,Good luck.

Check the EVAP system canister purge valve, usually located on or near the canister itself which should be near the fuel tank. If the valve is clogged or stuck, it will cause excessive backpressure in the vapor return system, which sounds like what is happening here. Good luck, hope this helps.
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

ok. I'll do that
well the codes are key if u have any, so get it tested.
