SOURCE: Crankshaft Position Sensor

The crank sensor is on the front of your engine behind the harmonic balancer. You will need a balancer puller for a 3.8 and a crank sensor alignment tool to do this lob.

SOURCE: replacing bad camshaft position sensor

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Remove water pump pulley attaching bolts, then the serpentine belt and water pump pulley.
  3. Disconnect sensor wiring connector and remove sensor retaining bolt.
  4. Twist and pull sensor to remove.
Reverse procedure to install and prior to installing new sensor, lubricate sensor O-ring.

It is located under the water pump. Make sure when you remove the sensor that you rotate the crank shaft and look in the hole to make sure the pick up magnet is still in there. Sometimes they come loose and cause a no start or long crank. You will need to have the code cleared still.

How to change cam sensor on pontiac GR AM 3,4L 1999

Place a jack underneath the engine with a block of wood on it as to not damage the engine and pump up the jack just enough to keep the engine from sagging down. Then remove the engine mount near the power steering unit. Removing the motor mount doesn't have to be done, but it makes it easier to remove the power steering pump (your choice). Remove power steering pump and set it aside keeping all the hoses attached. Camshaft position sensor is located beneath power steering pump. It should be held on by 1 bolt if I remember right. Disconnect the 2 wire harness and remove sensor.

How to take out an altanator on a 1999 pontiac montana

Instructions
    • Detach the negative battery cable from the battery of the Pontiac Montana with an open end wrench and move the cable so that it is not touching any metal objects.
    • 2Locate the alternator in the front of the engine on the passenger side of the engine compartment. The alternator will be on the top, side of the engine with a belt running to the crankshaft pulley.
    • 3Unfasten the electrical wire connector from the alternator by using a socket wrench to undo the nut and take the electrical wire connector off the terminal.
    • 4Loosen the bolts holding the alternator in place with a socket wrench just enough so that you can move the alternator on the bracket, and take the alternator belt off the pulley. Note: Do not remove the belt from the crankshaft pulley.
    • 5Undo both bolts on the alternator with a socket wrench until you can remove the bolts completely and take the alternator out of the bracket, removing it entirely from the engine compartment.
    • 6Position the new alternator in the bracket and slide the bolts back into place, tightening the bolts with a socket wrench until you can just barely slide the alternator on the bracket.
    • 7Place the alternator belt around the alternator pulley and check the position of the belt around both the crankshaft and alternator pulleys to verify that it is seated properly.
    • 8Place a crow bar between the alternator and engine block and pull back on the alternator with the bar to add tension to the belt.
    • 9Tighten the bolts on the alternator with a socket wrench while you keep the tension on the alternator belt.
    • 10Reattach the electrical wire connector to the alternator terminal by placing the connector and the nut on the terminal and securing with a socket wrench.
    • 11Connect the negative battery cable to the battery of the Pontiac Montana with an open end wrench.

2002 pontiac montana with an occational starting problem

Go to Autozone and they will check your cars trouble codes for free and tell you what part you will need to replace. They are usually right 99% of the time. The crankshaft position sensor located behind the harmonic balancer maybe be bad. There is another crankshaft position sensor located on the engine block above and to the right of the oil filter. Or it could be the power train control module located to the right of the air cleaner box. This information is for the V6 3.4 engine. Buy the repair manual for your Montana and go to the engine performance section. The manual costs about $26.00
