The "brake shifter switch" (brake light switch) is located underneath the dashboard, and links directly to the brake pedal assembly. If you look, you will be able to find the switch. It is the same switch that releases the lock solenoid on your shifter.
If your brake lights are working, it is not the culprit. Check the shift lock solenoid for proper operation instead.
more than likely you have a park lock solenoid problem , a lot of them are located on the shifter assembly or attached to a cable coming from the ignition when you press the brake pedal you can hear a click ," locate it" and disconnect the electrical connection to the solenoid
i cant remember if this car had console shifter between the seats. but the problem is the shift lock solenoid . usually mounted in the console . it gets a signal from brake light switch to energize the shift lock solenoid
If you replaced the solenoid that locks the shifter in park, the problem could be the brake light switch on the brake pedal. The pedal sends power to the solenoid to unlock the shifter.
these have a safety system so the shifter won`t go into any gear unless the brake is pushed(indicating someone sitting in the drivers seat),if the brake lights aren`t working this indicates that the fuse that operates the shift lock solenoid and brake lights is not working and needs replacing.check the fuses and replace the fuse and things will probably return to normal.
I have had the parking lights on my 1998 forester stay on w/ no way to turn off. Used the remote door lock to lock and unlock car and the lights went off?????????? This has happened twice with the same solution
1 of 2 things are going on, either the brake light switch is malfunctioning or the solenoid in the shifter assembly. when you apply the brake, you should hear a light click in the centre console allowing the shifter to release. if this is not heard, inspect the fuse block for burned fuses(unlikely but possible). next make sure your brake lights are working. if they are working it is perhaps the solenoid in the console itself. sometimes a little wd-40 works. but you need to get to it directly.
