I want to replace the thermostat on 2001 dodge Caravan but do the coolant flush first. Do I leave the old thermostat in or take it out to do the flush prior to replacing it?

When an engine is cold the thermostat is closed and that will prevent proper circulation of the flushing process so it make sense to remove it then flush out. flushing should be carried out from the top to the bottom hose and not include the radiator as any muck being flushed from the block will be caught in the cores of the radiator
radiators are flushed from the bottom upwards to dislodge any much out of the top tank
have you tested the thermostat before putting in a new one or is the real problem blocked cores in the radiator
many people change a thermostat unnecessarily when the overheating problem is caused by other factors not fixed by changing the thermostat

How do you replace 2001 dodge caravan heater switch?

To replace a thermostat in a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan, look at the engine. Should be located at the engine end of the upper radiator hose in removable housing. Drain about 1 gallon of coolant from radiator Remove housing - make note how thermostat is installed Clean both surfaces Install new thermostat and gasket Re-fill coolant slowly to prevent an "air lock" Start engine check for leaks Run engine to normal operating temperature with heater on Check coolant level.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My 2000 dodge caravan is overheating and my overflow tank is literally overflowing. I have no leaks in radiator or hoses. Could it be my waterpump or thermostat or just a clogged hose.

Yes, it could be a few issues, I always believe to go the cheapest route first, so you are not just replacing parts to be replacing, Based on your description, Normally it would not be overflowing if your pump is not working, It could be a clogged hose, you would have to flush system to see if that was the case, but based on my feeling, i believe it is a stuck thermostat, If your tank is overflowing, it would have to be a main hose block, but i don't believe that is the case, i would have thermostat replaced, to confirm that, for a around 50 bucks (if you stay away from dealer) you can have the radiator flushed, which is a good idea anyway, then you will know for sure it is the thermostat, and they can put that in after they flush it, or you can put thermostat in, pick there brain, when they flush it, and they can point where it is, it is just a couple of bolts to take off, clean gasket area, replace with new gasket, after of course taking old thermostat out and replacing with new one.

I hope this helps you, (again, i think it is thermostat that is stuck) thanks Mike from fixya

Temperature gauge goes up and down, no over heating, new thermostat and radiator flush..95 dodge caravan

Air is trapped in the engine most likey.Remove the coolant temp sensor located just next to the thermostat housing.Pour coolant in the radiator till no air comes out the hole and replace sensor and top off radiator.it should be full.If problem persists suspect clogged radiator or coolant fan issue.

IF COOLING FAN STAYS ON WHILE CAR IDLING AND DONT TURN OFF YOUR ENGINE IS RUNNING A LITTLE HOT.YOU COULD PARTIALLY CLOGGED RADIATOR OR ENGINE BLOCK PARTIALLY STOPPED UP ALSO THE THERMOSTAT NOT OPEN ALL THE WAY.HAVE VECHICLE SCANNED TO SEE WHAT COOLANT TEMPERATURE IS IF HOT.HAVE RADIATOR SHOP PRESSURE TEST COOLANT SYSTEM AND FLUSH OUT RADIATOR AND ENGINE BLOCK CHANGE THERMOSTAT.

Heater on my 05 Grand Caravan blows cold air when below 30 degrees - above 30 works fine. Heat gauge shows normal so it shouldn't be thermostat. Checked coolant and it is fine.

just because the gauge seems normal doesnt mean the thermostat is good, its 5 years old,and may be opening to soon, i would start by having the t-stat replaced and while thats being done have the cooling system flushed including a flush off the heatercore. i ve worked on a couple of these vans with heating problems, most were low on coolant due to a slow waterpup leak, the others with half plugged heatercores, due to the lack of coolant flushes. hope this helps.

Engine Cooling problem 2003 Dodge Caravan 6

It needs a thermostat and a coolant flush, in the worst case scenario a head gasket may be blown or leaking, have your mechanic do a coolant flush, thermostat, and leak check.

Heat 2001 dodge durango

a bad heater core will just leak. it could leak alot. do you ever smell antifreeze? check the coolant level. it can get pretty low before it will overheat. the thermostat should be ok but there could be corrosion. when you had the water pump replaced was the cooling system flushed? 2001, its probably due for a flush. what coolant does it take? (green or orange)

Heater not blowing hot but engine not overheating

The coolant thermostat needs replaced or you need a coolant flush. Heater cores (in the dashboard) often clog and stop warm coolant from circulating into the heater. A coolant flush would cure this. Flushes usually run from 70 to 90 dollars to have done at a service shop.
