It sounds like an idle speed motor, sometimes called an idle speed actuator. It is located on the side of the air intake. They occasionally fail and need to be replaced.

1988 ford t bird has a vaccum leak think its going to brake booster but cant find it. 3.8 liter v-6 fuel injected motor

Use a can of starter fluid and spray around your vacuum hoses while engine is running (spray very lightly). Since the vacuum comes from the engine your engine will rev up when you get close to the leaking hose. Good luck

I know some old fuel injected systems will dump fuel because of the coolant temp sensor should be located on lower intake in the front. Also check the timing.

Check the operation of your electric fan. It should come on when the ac is on or your defroster is on as well. If the fan isn't working the pressure is getting to high in the system. Causing the warm air issue. Please let me know if this helps you.

Need to know whats the best fuel octane for 88 ford ranger with 2.9 liter v-6 fuel injected engine

Hello!
You can use any brand starting from regular (87) to super or premium (93) depending on your budget. Lower octane gives you usually lower gas milage and can cause problems with engine starting in winter. So for winter time and better gas milage use medium grade.
Good Luck

High revs

being a fuel injected engine , there are many reasons this could be happening.
from the top , lets check the Manifold Absolute Pressure (M.A.P.) sensor , as it is easiest.
Find the MAP sensor , it has a couple a wires and a vacuum tube going to it and is on the firewall or fender support under the bonnet.
Disconnect the wire harness from it (small plug with wires).
If the engines RPMs drop to normal , replace the MAP sensor.
