How to make manual control of my electric cooling fan XJ 96 4Liter. I need the schematic, and colors of fan control wires. Engine coolant fan, (edited by admin) NOT HVAC,NOT BLOWER. NOT condensor fans. edit to override means turn it on with PCM turning it off.
RAD FAN IT IS. Engine cooling fan.
redux 1, 1996 XJ, 4.0L engine.
Rad fan, only.
RAD fan on,with PCM wanting it OFF. bypass.
or want fan to run fording streams. NO.
ask your offroad buddies what fording streams means. (hint it's not FORD car)
We do this offroad so the fan blades dont crash and break off, as they hit deep water.
posted vast times the free schematic, off the FSM book. links.
then chapter 8w (wiring)
then fan in index.
then , easy no?
pdf page 19 is the real index.
PAGE exact. XJ.
8w 42-9 is relay,pdf page 223
so lets go there.
WIRE COLOR ANSWERED !! below. 1st page of 8w show what color codes mean on all jeeps made.
the DB-PK wire on the relay D13
if grounded by any switch turns on the relay and fan.
do not use 12v power there or say goodbye to PCM. boom. (it will blow it up)
even grounding it can... (avoid the $500+ mistakes)
the free FSM
http://www.morris4x4center.com/knowledge-base/index.htm?utm_source=cj#service
pg 223 pdf page, chapter 8w,
Relay FAN. ECU runs it there are no thermal switches, the ECT readings do all this. and very well.
the coil has 12vdc power keyon, the other rlay pin is hot all time.bat pin
top right.
see my switch ?if you use center off version switch
mark center FORD
eg: normal(pcm), ford, BYpass (or active)
or normal, dead, force on.
the first image is the risky way... but some do that. just SPST switch. (2 pins toggle, id use the 3pin way)
Testimonial: "So I splice the blue and pink wire coming from relay D13. Then I connect my toggle switch. The first terminal on the switch gets grounded. The second and third terminal are still the blue and pink wire? Yes my truck is just a regular 4.0L 4x4 1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ I6."
the drawing is clear i hope but assumes you know how to find the wiper pin, D13.
on switches its the C pin for common
or use and ohmmeter to figure any switch out.(open closed, infinity ,0ohms)
yes, you just cut the D13 DB-PK wire
doing that assures you that the PCM can not be damaged.
in electronics we all that floating a pin.
see why?
answer , im not grounding the PCM pin.
hotwiring PCM pins to battery and sometimes ground, will blow up PCM. (fixed many if have)
(there are 3 types of PCM outputs)
EG:, (electronics 101)
a source driver,
a ground driver (this case)
or both called a bipolar driver.(used on other engine?)
and JEEP dont say.... on the drawings.
and some ECU report all faults on all pins
(for sure on newer jeeps)
so best is to do like my drawing shows.
PCM is open, in bypass mode.
if using a center off, it works 3 ways. best of best.
each maker uses there own marks.
here off is common wiper pin
on and on or the left pins shown above. PCM/Gnd.
the wiper in(off) goes to D13.
i think you need to get help from someone that can do simple wiring.
all this is basic elect. 101. stuff
the switch above is called
a toggle switch !
SPDT, signal pole double throw.
has 3 lugs , (id use a quality switch not that cheap imported crud sold in many stores)
and no center off, unless you want off, id not do that or risk engine, damage if it gets bumped to off. no really.

I jump a ground wire from asd relay #85 to #85 on fan relay. The fan will come on and turn off with vehicle. Yes it will throw a code but beats keeping the temp down. Until u do upgrades
Hello Joey Kirmu,
Ground Answer:
Radiator Fan Motor = S104 21 14BK (black)
Mainly out of curiosity
(ground being pretty irrelevant on automotive electrics)
I pulled up the drawing for your car... guessing at the engine size...
Thinking HEATER and I'm looking at a pretty complex mix of circuits showing an alternate between your defrost fan and your heater fan... Four speed lugs on your heater-motor resistor... all coming from a single 30 amp fuse.
No where does it show anything but a chassis ground...
I have finally come to the conclusion you are talking about
OVER-RIDING your RADIATOR fan's THERMOSTAT.
To do that... You don't need to know anything about GROUNDS (here either)...
Use the BBB Industries link (below, registration required) to pull up your thermostatic switch... and configure your override there!
Better yet: buy the factory manual for your vehicle (personally I prefer the paper/books (after a career of EVERY media)).
Hope this helps!

Testimonial: "I was looking online and every was saying it's not hard to override the fan you need to find the ground wire for the fan relay and splice it then connect a switch there. THE ONLY PROBLEM I AM HAVING IS WHAT COLOR WIRE!! I do not want to buy a new part I just want to install a toggle switch to trick the car into turning the relay on."
Still BLACK... But again: I would PARALLEL the thermal switch with your "SWITCH"... (B11 & B12, fan-relay)
otherwise you have no idea what BACK-FEEDING BATTERY into your RELAY may cause... besides violating all the engineering of your circuit (and fuses)... Else: make sure you got working fire extinguishers around... & pack a lunch (in case you are in the wilderness).
answers off the wall. why guess?
i gave you the real schematic above.
and the grounded switch.
do not use power here. or boom blow up the PCM.
there is no stinking thermal switch on any 96XJ unless its diesel.
but the OP never once told what engine he has. really poor that, sorry.
posting questions about engines, and not telling whats there is what, yes, not too swift !
D11, 12vdc key on, top coil
d10,12vdc all them time battery+
D14, fan. power.
D13 PCm, the PCM grounds this to energize the relay
so add a switch to ground as shown.
if really careful, (paranoid or just smart)
use a SPDT switch.
single pole double throw, switch.
like this.
label switch normal, bypass.. wish i knew what you wanted,,,, there are 2 reasons
and both are different solutions....
why must this be hard.
2 photos, more clear?
the D12 wire is DB-PK
you dont know jeep color codes, stated in every FSM in print,
here, ill spoon feed that too.
page 6
DB = dark blue
PK = pink stripe.
it goes to PCM output driver for fan.
the PCM watches the ECT sensor and runs the fan off of tables.
and if A/C is on, rules.
stop asking folks online how to modify jeeps
most have not a clue.
why not do it the right way.
and ask how to modify your jeep
you never once told if car is USA JEEP
or which engine,
3 engines, and the EXPORTS are not wired the same. sorry but not all jeeps wire the same
that is why all answers are wrong. it's you.
the above schematic, protects the PCM 100%
on newer smarter jeeps
you will get a fan open DTC error.
so there you go.... more complexity
the switch right pin is called common,
I do not think 1996 jeeps monitor this pin.
and the wild idea
"(ground being pretty irrelevant on automotive electrics)
totally 100% dead wrong. you need to go to school dude....electrics 101.
or even HS physics class.
all my answers, for USA, jeep XJ, non export
4.0L inline 6
I had to guess, due to you not saying it.
and for RAD FAN, only
and for turning fan on , not off.
turning off a fan we use that to fording streams. so that be and inline SPST switch.
on DB-PK wire.(cut)
cut fan, normal (label)
or Ford/normal. (fording deep water its called)
see?
was certified in 1964, now retired electronics tech.
Certified DC to daylight.
next time photo engine post it and
with name of your state. or if in Canada or?
the worlds a big place and cars very by, that.
Thanx Juriy... As I said before "Nicely said"... Sorry I didn't understand "fording"... Got it now!
Good work on the two keys as well!!
the only risk on any car here is making changes, and damaging the PCM and not knowing what is there first.
the schematic is free.
see my first post see that link to the FSM
chapter 8w is there, free to see every wire in the car, every color and purpose.
yes, fording a stream is an offroad term.
and having water hit a high speed plastic fan can be terminal to the fan.
to get that feature.
use same switch, but buy the switch with center off. (a feature on all toggle switches)
then mark it
Active, off(fording) and override.
not it works for all modes of travel
i corrected your post.
added RAD FAN
and bypass means forced OFF.
no hvac,fans,
buy the switch
and photo it
and can tell you easy which pin is what.
the pcm turns the fan on at about 220F
the pcm can discover any time the thermostat failing (hot) and turns on fast.
and early.
the spec is
quote.
103°C (218°F), or when air conditioning is requested,
the powertrain control module (PCM) provides a
ground path for the fan relay.
195F thermostat...spec.
hope this data helps.

Hi Joey Kirmu, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?did you know that a car should have a operating temp ,by overiding your fan could cause you more fuel usage as car would try to warm up by over fuelling .try checking your thermostat or waterpump if your car is overheating. sound like someone who has an overheating car.
My car does not over heat. I deliver pizza and I drive a lot. The car has no problem overheating while driving but when stopped the temperature starts to go up. It does go backdown however, if the electric fan just starts as I start driving I do not want the car to overheat. The electric fan comes on when the temperature reaches 230*.
