Were there any engine noises such as a lifter tick? If it were mine I'd be installing a manual oil pressure gauge to verify what the oil pump is up to. There were issues with the oil pump pickup screen o-ring. Either way, it should be looked into.

sounds like a non USA car, as all USA cars are OBD2 compliant in 1996, where are you located, (country? not GPS loc)

where surely not off the dash as that didnt happen till way newer cars.
is this the CEL blink test? of OBD1 technology?

probly hav a dirty throttle body and idle air motor--get some cleaner and a haynes book --also cud be egr valve

the problem will be faulty injector tips squirting and not atomizing take it to an accredited diesel specialist shop and have the new tips fitted and the injectors recalibrated

i would check the throttle butterfly for a carbon build up that may keep it from closing completely. have seen this cause stalling when returning to idle rpm. Best to try to remove and clean from both sides to get good results.this is just one of many possible problems. Hope it helps if so please let me know with a reply and good luck

a knocking sound in an engine is never good. with a high mileage engine things start to get worn. so bearing clearances get larger and things begin to knock and rattle. i would try running a higher viscosity oil than is recommended it might help with the knock. but truthfully it probably needs to be rebuild or a whole new motor installed

I would check the altenator again. if you didnt disconnect the battery and a spark shot off while installing the new starter it could have decharged the spool on the inside of the altenator to where the spool no longer charges. if you have the altenator checked for consistant charging and it comes up good check the relay for the altenator it most like will have messed up the relay. to make a long solution short check the relay for the altenator it will be in the relay box under the hood.

I have encountered this problem also, try changing your battery. My battery lasted almost 4 year till it was the cause the shot my alternator.
