Your transmission is probably going into "limp" mode. This happens when the car's computer senses something wrong that is potentially very bad. It is your cars way of telling you to take it to the dealer so they can read the error codes in your computer.
hey Chris we all need to know what kind of vehicle you have make + model + year + engine size + automatic transmission/manual transmission in order for someone to help you so post back with info and we'll take it from there be specific here please!
You need to take it to someone with a scan tool , that light is telling you there is a problem an more then likely there is a DTC - diagnostic trouble code stored in the transmission control module. What make, model an year vehicle ! Normally you drive in OD on freeway driving an drive every where else . some vehicles you put in OD ! Does it shift through all gears ? Could be a shift solenoid !
You will have to take to someone with a diagnostic computer. There are so many things that can cause a transmission to quit on these later models that a computer is the only way to find out. Hope it is just something minor and easily fixed. I'll throw a couple handsfull of good luck towards you, maybe that will help!

Are you getting a transmission warning light in the dash? If you get a warning light, you should have someone check the thermistor that reports the transmission temperature to the ECU. If you are not getting a warning light, it is probably time for a transmission rebuild.
A '95 probably has over 200,000 miles on it by now, right? If it has ever been treated roughly, and/or if the fluid has not been replaced every 50k miles or so, the transmission is due for some work.
Computer controlled transmissions can get confused at times, from my personal experience. If the problem doesn't happen again, I would ignore it. If it happens all the time, it's most likely the transmission computer. Other things could be the shift linkage, engine vacuum leak, speed sensor, etc... Hope this helps.
this type of problem is difficult to diagnose over the web or even a phone call. Your best bet is to go ahead and take it to a transmission shop as they have test equipment that can better pinpoint the problem more directly then someone saying oh its this fix or that fix. This issue can be caused by any of the 8 sensors( at minimum) in the transmission to the transmission control module, or the main car computer.
PLEASE don't take it back to an automotive shop. transmissions are 10x more complicated than the engine itself. most the time the shop will act like they know what is wrong but they don't. take it to a transmission technician , someone who specializes in transmissions, because the shop will keep trying expensive repairs just for the money. you could have replaced your tranny and it could have been a sensor
first thing i would try is unplugging your battery for 15 minutes, sometimes the tcm will record your driving conditions, say someone drives really fast it realizes this and shifts faster to accomidate the intense driving conditions, by doing this it should reset the computer, this is the cheapest fix i would try first, otherwise those guys may be correct. give the cheap simple path a shot first though, take care and good luck.
Could possibly be the transmission ecu. If the TCU (as it's known on some cars) Transmission Control Unit, is going bad or is bad it could cause the transmission to drive funny including irragular shifting, different gear ratios and so on. Depending on your vehicle make there may be ways to determin if its the transmission computer or not. Also double check your transmission fluid level...make sure it's at normal operating temerature and that the car is running and on level ground when u check the dip stick. Hope this helps, good luck
