Hello Judy,
It sounds like when you replaced the timing belt you may have missed the timing marks. You only have to be off one tooth on the gear to mess things up.
For all engines, the crankshaft alignment is the same, there is a small semicircular mark on the crankshaft pulley. That should line up with the triangular mark on the front cover. For the DOHC 1.6L, the marks on the cam sprockets should point towards each other, and be aligned with the machined surface on the top of the cylinder head.
there are many ways to mess up a new DOHC head.
sure timing marks top list.
but would they guess this?
this line speaks volumes to me.
"replaced 3 valves" ( id say they were bent)
who did? you?
you removed the cams, and not read the FSM
not how to setup the complex, DOHC engine.
its very tricky.(lots of pitfalls)
why not, pray tell, log into mitchells DIY
and read.
HOW to do it and not do it all wrong.
was the head warp checked,
and pressure tested.
did you use the sealant on the 3 cam caps.
did you check for top end oiling,OMG no?
and the shims, did you mess those up too
if you do , you burn up more valves.
true, TDC marks are all same,
when aligned #1 and #4 are TDC'd
guess 2: we cant watch you.. do it wrong.
i presume (sick) that you remove the distributor and now cant put it back correctly. ?
compression over 150psi. x3
and wont start on test fuel now, then spark is timed wrong,
seen many also move the distributor,
to correct the timing belt slips, (failed)
then later when the belt is corrected, now the
distributor is wrong, (as it will be)

90 Storm, must be in Canada, 1,6 (the comma tells me this)
the storm is a:
The car is really an Isuzu Impulse minus some of that car's more expensive features.
my guess is you drove the this 4EX1 engine until the cam belt slipped. yes> if yes you bent valves.????????????
so does compression exceed 150psi on all 4 cylinders now?
we use the cylinder leak down test in all DOHC .
if not , back to the drawing board.
if yes, the we check spark next, then try test fuel.
when did the engine last run , last week, month , year,?
who did your valves, a real machine shop or kid down the street.
a read shop pressure tests the head ,and warp checks it and
then makes sure the valves are ready for long service.
are the head bolts at 58 ft/lbs
did you use sealant on the 3 cap caps, per the FSM book.
if not , top end oiling will fail. and cams wrecked.
the 1.6l DOHC has no HLA's
the lash on valves must be checked, and this is corrected with SHIMS.
a pro machine shop does the for you,did they:?
when rebuilding engines, its best to read the factory service manual first. FSM so you know the special steps just for this engine.
ISUZU engine it is.
quote.
1.6L Twin Camshaft Engine
The notch on the crankshaft pulley should align with the 0 degrees mark on the timing gear case. Make sure the rocker arms on the No. 1 cylinder are loose and the rockers on the No. 4 cylinder are tight. If not, turn the crankshaft one complete revolution and align the marks again.
The rear camshaft bearing caps must be removed to remove the selective shim.
end fsm quote.
see those 2 marks, and crank must be at TDC. mark first.
why not log in to mitchell's DIY
and read the engine chapter first
almost all DIY head jobs fail.
and top reasons is not doing all steps correctly.
why risk bending more valves???????
this is not spam, its a good way to get
data on a this Corolla engine.
this is what many pro shops uses.
they dont read forum rumors, on engine builds
ever, nor to I.
http://www.eautorepair.net/Marketing/Def...
alldata.com too.
chilton 0 zero.
is the gas 1 month old, 1year,3years? old?
check fuses?
battery charged
cranks fast.?
got spark?
compression above 150psi on all 3>?
test fuel , work? (spray can, test fuel)
runs for 1-3sec , it must and sound good.
flooding (spark tips dry or soaked in fuel?)
obviously the head was removed.
and cam timing must be set.(ask)
then if head was worked on (in a machine shop since valves bad) then that means
the distributor was pulled, and with that
it must be timed, correctly. (ASK)
my wild guess, it's not.

There is no way they would leave you stuck with the engine!! However, the odds are that it should fit. First check the flywheel or flex plate. [Not sure if its a auto or manual.] If they bolt on, your are into installing the engine! Good Luck with it! Frankster016

yea dont let that guy work on it take it to a garage he just wonts your money and is not even putting parts on it
SOURCE: new timing belt keeps getting loose when it cools down
yes you can get defective auto tenioners.Chage ASAP.
First, Ronald is an IDIOT! DO NOT power wash the engine EVER! If the engine is really hot and you spray ice cold water on it can crack the head instantly! Also, everyone knows' water and electricity don't mix! the ignition control module is $300. A little water on that and its gone!
If your car is overheating, you may need a water pump! The one you got, may have been bad! The rule is, as soon as a car overheats, the thermostat MUST be changed! A simple test would be to remove the thermostat and close it back up! A few dollars for the gasket is all you will spend! Try and run the car without it and see if it still gets hot! If it still gets hot, check the water in the radiator or resivor to see if the water is also hot. If its hot then the water pump is working and you need to check the fans! You can run a power wire to the fan to make sure they are working. There are relays for those also! If they are not turning on, that is most likely your problem! I rebuild VW's for a living!
