not if the tank is full, sorry.
if too cheap for a tool
drive to and auto store and check for
    DTC
    and monitors all clear.
why is free a problem and smog stations expensive. its your call.?

if you drive slow the egr can fail. to clear.
the FSM shows all conditions to clear them its not some, NSA secret.>!
    choices,
1:bounce off smog stations like dog checking tail. (go broke fast, in calif get tagged omg gross polluter, DONT)
2: own a cheap scan tool, omg $10 to $100.
3: Have the car scanned anywhere. stores, shops, savvy friends , savvy neighbors, or?
siblings savvy. i do my whole hood for free.

7 choices there, count them and YOU DECIDE.

The question is even wrong. (it not miles or time)!
we have no idea at what works on you engine or not, or the transmission.
There are 2 classes of monitors.
catastrophic if engine sensor and trans.
and smog systems. (EPA class monitors)
There are many mandated monitors.
each and every one HAS PRECONDITIONals
That must be satisfied,to even begin the tests.

The FSM book is clear on that as is the operators guide telling you all monitors must be run out and passing before any smog test.!!!
auto clearing DTC errors are trips. not miles or time.

facts all. here.
1: CEL lamp out. running.(aka SES or MIL)
2: no DTC errors from engine or TRans or FAIL you will.
3: ALL MONITORS MUST BE RUN OUT AND PASS.
(some states do allow 1 to be pending status!)

the monitors can and will stall, in fact, if the precondidtions are wrong. a fact!.
even a full gas tank stalls the EVAP monitor , fact.
only owning a scan tool or asking your mechanic
to check it can you in fact know if car is ready for the state smog test. a hard cold fact.
Sorry, i dont make the laws, i deal with it.

the EGR will run out (run and pass) if you drive fast hot, engine, then cost to a stop, from fast.
this clears 2 EGR monitors, (for dead egr and stuck open, monitors)

there are more,, but im not telling the full FSM book here, why would I.?

why not, buy the tool and learn to use it
or let you mechanic do what you can't or refuse to do. there is no other way.

most shops will scan it for free, this line here
posted like 1billion times on all car forums.
it's no secret,

runs out means
the Monitor (a test) begins
runs with no errors
and completes and passes.
and the clears the PENDING status to complete.

new more fact, have them,.

so true, the owner manual even told you that.
it told you the all monitors must be run out.
in clear English. RTM and win.

The PCM stores 2 things in memory, errors
and monitor status (longer answer from tech its more), EPA LAW MANDATED.
EVAP monitor is the hard one.
    here are the monitors.
all you do is drive until the REDs go away.
    all EPA LAW,
and if dont own a dirt cheap scan too.
then you pay the smog man over over.
its your call , your job.
We say Fish or cut bait?
    1996 to now, usa
    1998 to now, canada
its the law, cant change it.
each newer generation, same + more..
on cars with A/t trans, you fail smog if there are DTC errors for engine and TRANSMISSION.! )[p07xx codes common)
so if you dont full scan it, you fail.

    learn to use that tool
or let your mechanic do it for you.
there is NO other way, sorry, it's a fact.

now ,more truth if you can handle it?
the monitors can even be stalled,
that means the conditions for the monitor are failing, so sorry there is no, 40 trips 40 miles, 40 day rule, (i guess you love lies)
the rules of or Auto clearing errors DTC
the monitors are running full time.
    all the time by LAW.
the monitors, first must have preconditions correct. imagine in school lab and the lab tests was (say physics or chem) and the scale is broken(grams), do you just blindly proceed?
no , an neither does your PCM.it is not that daft.
it halts the monitor with errors.
it also has rules for each test.
one is EVAP and tank can not be full.
just 1 example if you need them all from the FSM , i can in fact post them.
but my guess, is you only want to hear lies.
    so end here.

  • Anonymous May 31, 2016

Also on my car if the 02 monitor fails. the CAT monitor is held pending for ever.
    and you fail.

  • Anonymous May 31, 2016

as you can see the logic is complex
why not just put your mechanic in the loop and avoid all this guessing and getting lies here.

I have a 2001 Jaguar XJR.It drives great, no check engine lights. The Issue I am having in South Cali and it would not pass the SMOG test due to the EGR monitor being not ready.

Hi Derek, Im AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair.

Derek, the first thing I would do is contact the dealer and see if there is a engine controller update for the EGR Monitor not running. If there is no update! NEXT: I would replace the EGR Valve with a new one, then remove the negative battery cable for 20 minutes then reinstall the cable. NEXT: Drive the car for at least 50 miles at different highway speeds. Turns the key off for about an hour, then drive another 20 miles. NEXT: Pull into an AutoZone and ask them to check and see if all of your emission monitors have run so you can pass inspection. NOTE: Without me physically doing diagnostics to see what the problem is unfortunately this is the best approach I can give you. Hope this helps and please visit my auto-repair-website at: http://www.bigasautorepair.com/

Hello, I have a 2003 tiburon and I replaced the battery a little while ago. I have only driven it around town since. It has failed the smog test twice now and I was told that the Drive Cycle has not...

after you replaced battery you have to drive 200-250 miles for computer to get all the info about car - in other words (to engage Drive Cycle). Remember that for next time. Never go for smog test right after you disconnect and reconnect battery- for all cars.

02 ranger 3.0 eng. pings bad

Try disconnecting the positive battery cable, then turn on the headlight switch to drain the system of any stray voltage. Wait 10-15 minutes, then turn the headlight switch off and reconnect the positve battery cable. Start the engine and drive the truck normally for 20-30 miles so the computer can relearn the engine's operating parameters.
If that fails to cure the problem, check for leaking vacuum lines or loose wiring connections.
Another possibility is an inoperative or leaking EGR valve. I would have the computer scanned for trouble codes, before replacing the EGR as they can be a bit expensive.

Replace egr valve on 3.5 litre 215ci v6 how to?

  • Disconnect the car battery. Locate the EGR valve. You may need to refer to the owner's manual.
  • 2 Unhook the air supply hose, vacuum hose and all electrical connections. You may need the screwdriver for this.
  • 3 Remove the EGR mounting bolts with the socket wrench.
  • 4 Unbolt the EGR valve from the EGR tube with the wrench. Use a wide-mouthed wrench, which works best for this.
  • 5 Look at the EGR valve. If there are holes in the valve, it definitely needs to be replaced. If there are no holes, you may opt to clean it by spraying a half can of carburetor cleaner into the valve. Let it sit, then use a gasket scraper, putty knife, small drill bit or long wood screw to scrape out the buildup in the valve.
  • 6 Install a new gasket and EGR valve if a total replacement is due. Attach all hoses, wiring and bolts that were previously removed.
  • 7 Reconnect the battery and test drive the car.

  • if this helps you please give a good thumbs up rateing thanks have good day

Mine has 217,000 miles. Has run great up until some time ago, when it started driving roughly only in wet weather. Now in dry weather, it starts fine, but drives roughly after warmed up (15-20 min) and...

The knock sensor NEVER causes a drivability problem. DO NOT change it. Instead, clean the MAF, Mass Air Flow sesnor that's on the air intake tube near air cleaner. It is coated with varnish. Spray with carb cleaner several times and gently, gently brush the wires. Theya re glass coated. Be careful.

Then disconnect battery for 2 hours and then reconnect and drive for 0 miles for computer to relearn engine contrils.
