Replace rear seal (drive shaft) on manual trans and started leaking badly

Before taking this job on yourself, call a few local transmission shops as found in the phone book and ask them for a price to replace the rear seal on the transmission. Lots of work and a lift is ever so handy in doing this type of job. Now when you tell them what you want, have them say it back to you. No matter what you actually say, they will give you a ballpark price to replace the rear seal on the engine to fix an oil leak cause that is what they heard you say. You want to replace the rear seal on the transmission, to fix a transmission fluid leak. This is much cheaper job than the seal on the engine.

Failing that buy a cheap service manual on CD over on eBay and do a search on www.youtube.com, some nice guy has probably put up a video of a rear seal change on a GM transmission product and they are all about the same.

need to identify where leak is coming from wipe clean bottom of transmission and check trans lines ,dipstick tube, rear seal ,pan for leak or drip start van and let run drive around block than park and recheck trans for leak if leak by where engine and trans meet than front seal anywhere else fix and or replace front seal two choices first can try a trans leak additive follow instructions carefully or need to pull trans to replace seal

Depends on where it's leaking from and how long your planning on keeping the car? The touque converter to the pump seal leak is a big job and if it's leaking there there is likly other trans problems lurking for the person that starts into this repair and may cause the whole trans to have to be rebuilt just to get it working again. The pan gasket seldom leakes unless it's been off for service and the tech doing the work skipped a few steps putting it back. The axel seals aren't too bad to do but the axel is partway out or something or reinstalled by a less than careful mechanic. The cooling lines to the reditor are a common leak install new hoses that are for transmission fluild and even get the dealer part as they fit good and don't leak and are easier to instal than straight hose. Changinging the fluild at the service intervals and not overdriving the car these trans seldom leak as almost all the problems I've ever fournd are caused by bad mechanic work and not wear and tear except the cooling hoses.

If oil is leaking from the transmission then one of the seals was installed improperly take it back to the person who rebuilt it and ask them to take a look at it for you and repair it if it's warrentied.

No clamp, it sounds like it is just a bad seal.
Just remove the drive shaft and pry out the old one and tap in a new one. very easy on those cars. juts make sure you put some tran fluid on the rubber part of the seal before installing the drive shaft or it can tear it.

try getting the freeze plugs checked out. =]

You have a Seal out in the Tail of the Tranny. Where the Drive Shaft Yolk Enters there is a Seal that goes around it to Prevent this.

it sounds like you have a tail shaft seal gone in the transmission it's not a difficult fix if you are handy. Remove the drive shaft and remove the tail stock seal(there are install and removal tools but a hammer and a screwdriver will remove it nicely)then replace with new seal (if you don't have the install tool a 5" long piece of 2x4 and a hammer works BE GENTLE!!!!)and reinstall drive shaft..........these seals are available at your local auto parts store and are usually no more tan $10.00

Did you use a motorcraft seal? aftermarket seals are not as good, the factory seal is double lipped as far as I remember.

There are only two paths for oil there. The rear main, and a oil galley plug a little higher up, about 2 o'clock.
