See if the shifter has a manual override to unlock. Tell your wife to step on the brakes and see if the brake lights are working. The brake switch disengages the shift lock
When you release the brake pedal, there is a switch underneath the brake pedal that disconnects the circuit to your brake lights causing your brake lights to switch off. Sometimes this brake light switch will go bad and need replacement. If your brake light stays on after you turn your car or truck off and you don't want to run your battery down, you may be able to get down underneath the brake pedal and manually pull up on the brake light switch to deactivate it until you can get it repaired. and i think you can make a diagnostic by yourself and the Autel MaxiDAS DS708can help you
The brake switch will stop all current to the brake lights. As soon as the brake pedal moves just off of its fully up position, the switch makes contact and passes current on to the brake lights. You can operate it by hand to check if everything is right. izzit adjustable? The switch is the last thing in the path to the brake bulbs, so it has to work right, right off the brake pedal!
yes, both are operated by the brake light switch above the pedal. Check to see it it's aligned properly such that there is clearance between the switch and the pedal arm when you press the pedal. You can verify the switch is bad by pulling the connector off and connecting the terminals inside the connectors. One connector is for the brake lights and the other for the shifter. Use a large paperclip to connect the terminals in the connector. The switch costs only $8 at autozone. see picture of switch below. Let me know if you have any questions and thanks for using FixYa.
There is a switch under the dash that is actuated by the brake pedal arm. Take a look at that and make sure it is properly being depressed or released with the movement of the brake pedal. You will need someone to watch the brake lights while you mess with it. Good luck.
