Might be especially if it was the inlet manifold that was loosened. It is better to remove completely such things and then ensure they are refitted correctly with new gaskets or seals if required.
An air leak usually produces a hissing noise which can be located with a short length of hose used as a listening tube. Could be a split or displaced vacuum hose which sometimes don't like being disturbed on an older car.
That was not a good idea your friend had.
Yes it is.

First, turn the key switch to LOCK. Disconnect the battery and wait a few minutes to make sure the airbag is disarmed. Remove the engine cover panels from below the engine. If you need more room, consider removing the air cleaner, upper radiator support, battery and tray and the coolant reservoir and hose.
Remove the starter wires then the starter. Pay attention to which bolt goes to which hole as they are different lengths. Putting it back together should be self explanatory. Good luck!

No. Removal of the intake manifold is not an attractive option.

You will need to replace the intake manifold gasket, and several others.

this sounds like the electric fuel pump in the fuel tank has failed, replace the pump and filter togeather.
It sounds like you have a bad actuator. This is attached to the starter and has a solonoid that pushes the starter motor gears into the engine gear. If the solonoid is faulty this may happen. Also check alignment of the same.
