Will the check engine light come on when it is time for an oil change?

Check the oil pressure with a mechanical test gauge and it will likely be ok, if so replace the oil pressure sending unit. Do not use any oil thickener in this engine it can damage the bearings.

check engine lite does not come on when oil change is due. This usually happens when there is an emissions problem.

The "Oil Change Reminder Light" has to be reset.

To reset the oil change reminder light with the accelerator pedal, turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Do not start engine. After turning the ignition ON, depress the accelerator pedal fully to the floor and let it up again 3 times within 5 seconds. The oil change reminder light should flash a few times to let you know that it is resetting. If it does not flash, turn the switch OFF and repeat the procedure. After it flashes, turn the ignition switch OFF. Then start the engine. The light should come on for a bulb check then go out and stay out.

that light is a maintenance reminder light. Check with who ever changes your oil, and have them reset it.

Usually the turn key/pump 3 times works for the check engine light. Smart to try that though.

This should only be indicating time for an oil change. Now, if the red, check engine light comes on, then you have an oil/engine problem.

Possibly the maintenance light wasn't reset when the last change was done. If you don't have the owners manual to check, I found a referenced method (below) to reset it through AMSOIL synthetic oil products. Good Luck

To reset Engine Oil light. Turn the ignition key to RUN with the engine off. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal three times within five seconds. If the Change Engine Oil light is flashing, the system is reset. The light will flash for up to 30 seconds or until the ignition is turned off. If the light comes on again and stays on for 30 seconds at the next ignition cycle, it did not reset. You will need to reset the system again.

That car should use 5W30 oil, check on the filler cap, or owners manual. If you are in freezing weather, use a synthetic oil. The Change oil light is reset by turning the key on, then depressing the gas pedal to the floor 3 times. The Check Engine light is another subject and a repair shop will need to diagnose and recommend repairs. If it has a 3.0 V6 its not that user friendly. the Cadillac Catera uses that engine.

This happens because the oil filter needs to be free of air. When the oil pressure sensor drops below a certain value it shuts off the injectors because the PCM. This is a good feature because if you run out of oil for any reason it should stop the engine before damage occurs.

Is it an oil pressure light or an oil change light (check the owners manual) If its an oil change light it may be time to change the oil. If its an oil pressure light you could have a short to ground in the wiring or at the oil pressure sender mounted on the engine. Also are you checking the engine oil with the engine running or off. The transmission is checked with the engine running, engine oil with engine off. If it is low on oil it will intermittently flash. Also when you check the oil wait five to ten minutes after the engine stops to let the oil settle before checking or you may get false readings.
