Wing mirrors fold in & out ok, but it will take several attempts with selector switch for them to stay in selected position. Baffled - is this a selector switch problem?

Unclip your inside trim right behind the mirror mounting. You should be able to find the screws attaching the mirror.

I've never had to disassemble a Jeep power mirror. One of two possible problems here. Depends on how Jeep conveys the power to the "wing". If they use brushes and contacts, it may just be that the brushes got dirty when you folded it in [onto a corroded contact area] If this is the case, spray some penetrating oil into the gap between the wing and the base. Then fold and unfold the wing several times to clean the contact. Make sure that you have the wing pulled all the way out. There should be a detent that you can feel.
If they use a wiring harness going up all the way inside the wing, one of the wires has broken. you would need to remove the mirror, disassemble it and repair the damaged wiring.

Each of the outside power mirrors contains 2 reversible motors to provide horizontal and vertical movement of the mirror glass. The vertical motor operates the up and down directions and the horizontal motor operates the left and right directions. If equipped with power folding mirrors, each outside power mirror will contain a reversible fold motor to operate the extend and retract functions. Each of the mirror motors are circuit breaker protected.

Circuit/System Description
The driver door switch (DDS) and front passenger door switch (PDS) each contain switches that control power door lock and window functions. The DDS also contains the control switch for the power outside rear view mirrors. These switches are integrated within the door control modules and are not serviceable as separate components. The DDS and PDS monitor these switch inputs for internal faults and set B1023 00 if any are detected.

You could have any number of problems an without testing , hooking up a scanner that can check DTC'S in the door module ,electrical circuit testing etc... we'd only be guessing . Your best bet mite be to take it to a qualified repair shop.

if you wish to "set" the seat and outside mirror, then ignition key to ON, no seatbelt, transmission in "P", no breaks. press SET at the door panel, move the seat and/or mirror to your position, then press "1" or "2", according to the key color you use ( 1 with the black key, 2 with the gray key). If you wish to fold the mirror ( if equipped with), press the button in the center of the mirror mover switch to fold them, press again to unfold.

The power mirrors are controlled by a module (computer) DDM - drivers door module an the PDM - passenger door module .

The folding mirror system requires signals from 2 separate switches. The mirror select switch must be in the neutral/fold position and the mirror direction switch must be activated to the left/extend or right/retract positions. Both switches are integrated into the DDM and provide direct signals.

Upon receipt of the required switch inputs the DDM will supply battery voltage and ground to the mirror fold motor control circuits to perform the requested extend or retract function. The DDM will also send a class 2 message to the PDM indicating the requested function. The driver door module (DDM) and passenger door module (PDM) switch the mirror fold motor control circuits to battery voltage and ground in response to mirror extend or retract command.

Has it ocurred to you that your wing mirrors are not the electrically folding type, most are not. The switch on the drivers arm rest for adjusting the mirrrors will have a separate position for folding if yours fold. The resistance to fold by hand is very stiff as you have to overcome the spring tension, even when folded by hand they do not fold as flat as you might think.
I purchased a 2006 Golf 5 GT Tdi last year it had £5000 worth of factory fitted options but did not have electrically folding door mirrors - hope this helps.
